Your thoughts on this...

I have a question for all you out there: If you were to move your metal detector coil over a piece of coal, would you or should you get a reading? I found what I think is a piece of coal this week-end (on the beach of all places) but when I run my coil over it I get a heavy nickel reading????
I tried it with both my detectors and got the same reading from both....
Maybe a metorite piece???? I may be reaching for straws on this one.....
My darn camera isn't working right now but the piece is black and pretty shiny (like coal)

bitumonous & anthricite coal are simply decayed plant matter.carbon.

the coal alone would produce no conductive properties.but whats inside could!if someway,something got sandwiched in there..who knows.

Maybe you should break it apart to see what is inside.

The piece you have is probably not a peice of meteorite. One way to tell is if it is unusually heavy for its size. Otherwise it is a carbon based product.

I do a little blacksmithing so took my MXT out and found a clear piece of ground, no signal, not even a hot rock which is rare here. Put a piece of coal on the ground and got no signal, dug a piece of coke out of my forge and did get chatter but, because it's been in the forge and there is a good possibility there is metal in the coke from one of my projects..

My detector will react to a piece of coal too. It acts just like a hot rock. I've dug coal several times. Monty

These 2 are pretty much the same. I recently got a detector from Great Britain. In reading the instruction manual evidently coke is a big problem there. They said to remedy this set your detector to the salt water mode, if it has one! In this salt water mode it will ignore the coke. I know that some of you have detectors that do not have this mode but some do! Also I believe that I read in one of the Charles Garrett books that coke or a Hot Rock will not respond in the All Metal Mode! Hope this helps.......
