Default Open for suggestions

I have just acquired permission to hunt a piece of property in my county which is c. 1836. They have resided the house in the past and roofed it also. There are plenty of scrap pieces of siding and nails around. I have gone around the foundation and I could not get any good readings because of all the scrap. This property has 182 acres and I was told it had slave quarters also. I would like suggestions on the best way to attack this project. I have found a trash dump in the back and found a pitch fork and hoe head which seem to be from the mid 30s or 40s. There is also another dump site closer to the cultivated fields. I am looking at a lot of open land with some wooded. Looking forward to all posts. I am using a Garretts 1350 and Ace 250 with all the extra coils for the Ace. A little history of the place, it is in an area that was once a lumber hamlett on the railroad. Property originally went to Ocmulgee river about 8 miles due east. Property is mostly level with a sandy/loam type soil.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Would it be best to go over this area with the Ace first and then follow it with the 1350 or vise versa? Just curious. (watch out for the goat) he is big and stinks.

Default How to

If I had a site that big I'd do some random sampling of various places I was able to identify. If I found some promising articles in a given area then I would grid it off into smaller sections and work the shallow stuff and trash first. Then go back and hit the heavy, deeper signals. MB

Default What Detector To Start With?

I would start with the detector that you have the most experience with. Also start with no discrimination and look for square nails this would date a site to be very old! Once you have found a site with square nails you can decide whether to dig those up or you can discriminate them and concentrate on the higher conductive metals such as brass and silver, etc. On the very trashy iron sites too bad that you don't have a Compass Coin Hustler or 77B type detector these are good at ignoring the small iron targets but still very good at seeing all the brass and silver targets close to all the iron debri! Since you don't have the Compass use the smallest coil available such as the 3 or 4 inch coil for the Ace. This small coil will see around all the iron debri and locate targets that otherwise would be masked out! Hope this helps Joe
