Default Winter Storage

Is there anything special that needs to be done before I put my MD away for the winter. I know that the batteries need to be removed. Anything else? Also what is the best way to store it? Standing in a corner? Hanging on a wall? Laying flat? Interested in hearing all types of suggestions. JoAnne

Default JoAnne,

Living in Virginia and being an avid Relic hunter I hunt year round. I do though clean my detectors after each use with baby wipes and pay special attention to taking the coil cover off and cleaning that as well. I also use a toothbrush to clean around the coil/rod assembly (seems dirt always wants to build up there).

I think if you do what I mention above as well as remove the batteries you will be fine. You might want to consider a storage (gun type) case for your detector.

Hope this helps,

Ed

Hi Chuck - I have a Whites Prizm V which I just got the end of September. I am very new to Metal Detecting. I live in New York. If you look at a picture of the State of New York I live in the very upper right hand corner of the state near the Canadian border. Ground freezes very hard here. Not able to detect all year round like some of my southern TQ friends. JoAnne

Woods hunting will greatly extend your hunting season as many times when the turf is frozen the leaves tend to keep the wooded areas workable longer and with a lesche hand mattock you could hunt almost all year unless the snow is too deep or too cold and provided your in a safe area.

Otherwise Take out the batteries, clean it up with Armoral wipes as Ed and boobie said, and store in a clean ,dry , warm spot. When Spring comes reinstall new batteries.

Is it safe to rest it in a corner on the coil or should it be hung?

I hear you Leslie. Unfortunately I am an old lady and the cold really gets to me - so does not matter if the ground is frozen or not. My old bones freeze up. LOL

Default What!!!

Don't you hunt in the snow??

I take a small pick and hunt the ski & sledding slopes.

It works great for the frozen soil under the leaves in the woods also.

Of course you have to keep the detector clean & dry but winter hunting is exciting and fruitful as warm weather hunting. just dress for it.

If you do not find much you always have the hot chocolate, good Scotch or warm wine and a short nap to enjoy when you return home.
