Have a question for XLT users or anyone who might know what I'm talking about, because obviously I don't. Does activating the V.C.O. help in pinpointing? If so how? and does turning this function on affect anything in the search mode? I'm trying to make the pinpointing a little better. I've been digging a couple of empty holes lately, and I think the pinpointing might be the culprit. A couple times I enlarged the hole south of the center and found the prize. One time a large washer , the other time a shotgun shell. I don't mind the results , point is there was a lot of extra digging for the results.

Tony, i use the DFX, but the VCO when enabled in non motion mode increases loudness and pitch. What you may be getting is halo effect from rusted medal.

Hi Tony,

There are many factors that may cause you to dig empty holes and most likely will get better as you gain experience with your detector.

A few things to know is what size coil are you using?

What are your hunting conditions ? Modern trash, decomposing iron, a combination of both.

Are you digging definate repeatable signals from various angles that appear to always hit at the same exact spot on the ground.

We only learn by digging but there are a things that may help reduce digging empty or terribly offcenter holes.

I prefer using the depth readings bar graph to pinpoint and if you read the 4 th paragraph on page 12 in the Advanced Pinpointing Techniques it describes the process. The bottom bar will show and hold the closest distance the coil centered over the target and the top bar will continually move back and forth. When you locate and focus on the spot where both bars stay even that is the best center i've found so far. Some like VCO but not me :) my ears can't take it.

Sent you a PM if you care to get back. HH Bill

Halo is when metal begins to rust or corrod it melts into the soil and makes the object appear larger or somewhere other than where you started digging. sometimes when you dig, the object turns sideways also and appears to dissapear.

Thanks dewcon - I am new to detecting and I was not sure what halo was either. Thanks for the explanation. JoAnne
