Default Permission Question

I was up in Cobleskill, NY this weekend and I really wanted to detect the Fair Grounds there. It is a very big an organized event and has been going on since 1879. They have a dedicated fair grounds, just for the event. Its fenced off, say 'They take pride in their fairgrounds' and signed by the Cobleskill Agricultural Center.

Now my question is, I'd like to detect the fairgrounds, I can write a letter to the agricultural department and the town clerk, but what should I send them? I know there is a MD creed. Would it behove me to explain that, when I'm done digging a hole, they won't hardly notice or should I send some type of permission slip?

How do you go about requesting permission to search a place and make them feel comfortable that I am not going to tear up their grass.

I don't live in Cobleskill, but I own a home up there and go up 2-3 times a year.

Appreciate the help.

Don

Don, I also am wondering how one would go about seeking permission for MDing certain areas. There are old houses in some woods off a well traveled road here. They are condemned and haven't been lived in for decades. My question would be "who do I contact?"

I'm really hoping this thread will take off well with others giving their suggestions and remarks about how they seek permission to metal detect the areas they are eyeballing. Seeking permission is my #1 hinderance to MDing. Sometimes I just don't know how.

Please give us your input, TQ members.

Nice pic. I was standing next to that grandstand in the picture. I had my detector with me, but was reluctant to take it out. I went to the police station, then looked for a police car, but didn't find any, so I went home and detected in the my yard.

But, if you're in that neck of the woods, maybe in the future we can go out on a hunt somewhere.

Default Gettin Permission

Down here in Texas most big open areas such as county fairgrounds and Carnival sites are open to the general public for treasure hunting. Very Seldom do we need to ask permission. But if one is hesitant to search a site go visit the local sheriff or police dept. And ask them if it is okay to do so. The reason is if any one calls in a complaint it is the sheriff or police who will enforce it! And of course if they do get a call and you already talked to them, it is always easier to get out of trouble with a friendly face than with an unfriendly one. Also getting permission to hunt abandoned or condemned buildings, go to the local school tax office and inquire on who is paying the taxes on that land. You don't have to tell them your TH'ing intentions. Say that you are interested in that piece of property and would like to contact the owner. In some cases the propery has reverted back to the city or the school district due to non-payment of taxes. If this is the case I would just hunt the property. Be careful around the condemned buildings... lots of busted out glass and if you venture inside a wall or floor may collapse on you! Good luck........
