Metal detector comparisons?¿?¿?¿

Recently I bought a detector. Well technically I bought 2. I did some quick research (I was to anxious and wanted one NOW ) went out and bought a detector. Then I did more thorough research while I was waiting for the 1st to arrive and bought a better one (I hope). I looked hard core online for about 6 days straight. I’ve been a computer geek since pre windows 3.11 and I type over 50 W.P.M so believe you me I covered A LOT of ground. I’m a very analytical person and tried to analyze and compare detectors to find out, which was the best overall for my buck.

Do you know what I found in that time for good strong head to head research done on the best companies out there for metal detecting? Hardly anything at all. I found a lot of opinions and a lot of “What’s the best detector” questions and a lot of “That’s a tough question to answer it depends on what you are looking for (e.g. coin shooting, relics, your budget ect.)” answers.

But hardly any actual tests done. Does anyone know of any good research done at least on some of the more reputable companies like Whites, Bounty hunter, Garrett, Minelab and so forth? I would have figured that the what’s the best detector question being so popular that there would have been more research done on this giving the cost involved in the area.

I did see one website where it was part of a MD club. The guy had a list of like 10 different metal detectors. He had like 40 different tests he did with them. Gave about a 3-sentence explanation on each test. But the guy DIDN’T show what the results where! That was frustrating. If any of you are in a club decent size maybe someone could hold a little competition or something with the members. Perhaps do a double blind test or something and post the results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m not necessarily looking for the most expensive or even the best detector ever built. Just some independent comparisons done on different brands. Unfortunately Consumer Reports hasn’t covered metal detectors yet.

I would have to agree on where you swing it and how well you learn the detector that you have and I have a white's and has held up with no problems at all!!!!!! Never had to send it back to the factory and get's good depth!!! Just read the post's and look at the finds and at what depth they where found!!!! If you are a computer geek you should be able to get one of those detector's to work great!!! I bet you could sure give me some tips on how to get better performance from mine!!!

I mostly agree with the consensus that it ain't what you bring but where you swing and is so important to hunt sites that have significant potential to produce the finds you most desire.

Free2DTect has excellent points and the "wheats don't count" is excellent read and he has proven finds as does boobie

I understand your desire to find the ultimate detector for yourself and could read a hundred test results and opinions on various detectors and become so mystified and confused that you'll never decide and if you do you'll always be curious. What if you buy an Explorer ,DFX, GTI 2500, T2,F75,a Nautilus etc. and are disappointed with your finds ? where do you go next?

The questions or comments from other detectorists about what your looking for and where is the most important reason for buying the proper detector.
The main thing that really matters is how a particular detector will work in your hunting environment and it may take several detectors and coil combinations to hunt your sites and achieve your objectives succesfully provided you learn each detector to full potential. HH Bill

Keep in mind that it is just my oppion but whites about any they are all good and I am sure ther is one for you . Even good used ones for a good deal.ebay

Ive used several detectors. Eduction is good, air test and all of that, but sometimes there just isnt a substitude for good ole "on the job" training and experience. Everyone has their favorites, because they are working for them and their needs. I like my DFX because of all the options, screen info, and dont mind pushing buttons. Every detector has trade offs.

all of above location location and learn it. put me in a empty field with a 1000 dollar det. i aint finding nothing. put me in a hot spot with a 100 dollar det. i'll clean up. BUT its when you work that location out the higher technologies machines come in play. when you learn em. i thought i new my minelab now 6 months later i know it. another 6 months i'll love it.
