do you rake after you have found everything the detector detects or can I rake before I find something and just do raking so everything gets to one area and detect and scoop? It's an intresting question because I hear people talking about raking.
Right now having a little Jim Bean on the rocks and here with the family having a good time. Good hunting to everyone. I will be out tomorrow. |

Are you talking about regular raking to remove all the trash debri that clutters your search area? Or are you talking about Treasure Raking? This is a device built to shallow scoop out a area and it sifts all targets thru a screen. The Treasure Rake is effective but it sure is a lot of hard work cause one needs to drag it thru the surf or beach area on a harness type device. Also it only does shallow sifting . If one tries to go deep it will hang up!! I found that it is more effective to just use a P.I.detector and dig all deep and shallow targets. I have found rings and coins over a foot deep WITH THE P.I. DETECTOR!!!!!........................Joe

It's best to use a lawn rake in order to remove the surface trash in the area you wish to detect... aluminum foil and soda/beer cans will be taken out of your way as well as bottle caps. Not only are you removing metal trash, you are also removing larger leaves, sticks and branches that we usually kick out of the way when we are detecting where they rest. Lots of paper trash will be removed as well, and if you are in a public field or park, you will be noticed as helping the community as well, and could likely keep people from deterring you from metal detecting!

Thanks for the info. Did you do the sifting thread? I saw it and it was very interesting. I was trying to find it again to read it but lost it. I was trying to think what sifting was and now I have an idea what it is. You say that it is pretty hard but I have no problem with working hard. Actally I work out and train 5 to 6 days a week with heavy weights and do 30-40 minute cardiovascular exercises 6 days a week so if this sifting is a hard workout I would be killing 2 birds with one stone. WHEN I TALKED ABOUT THE RAKE I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE RAKE FOR THE GRASS TO USE FOR RAKING THE TREASURES BUT I GUESS THIS IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF RAKE. I saw on that thread that you can make one. If that is the case I think I will do that because I have spent enough already with this whites DFX detector and eventhough it's a great tool and I feel I got my money's worth I do not want to spend more cash until I get all my money's worth. ANYWAYS SOMEONE POSTED HERE I THINK IT WAS POPPY OR SOMEONE THAT IF YOU MADE ONE THE RIGHT WAY FROM SCRATCH IT IS THE SAME OR BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL.
Now that I think about it I have seen these trucks at the beach that have a lot of little metal pieces like a huge rake and make the sand all even again. These machines probably also collect coins and garbage and stuff like that. I WILL ASK ONE OF THESE OPERATORS WHO OPERATE THESE MACHINES WHEN I SEE THEM AGAIN. Does this happen around your beaches? sorry for the long response but this is very interesting to me. THEY ARE PROBABLY MAKING A KILLING ON SPARE CHANGE. |

I know people who have dug 5 foot holes sifting for DIAMONDS BUT THAT IS ANOTHER STORY!!!! Also I know bottleshunters who wouldn't hesitate in digging such deep holes. But back to the Treasure Rake: There use to be a book on plans to build one. I'll see if I can get the name of the book! But it probably went out of print years ago. This device was homebuilt and used lawnmower parts and wheels. The front area had teeth to help dig thru the sand with the wheels on the sides. The sand and other objects would flow over the teeth and be caught by a wire screen. It had a Lawnmower type handle on the front to help one drag it thru the sands. Some attached a harness to their upper body to help to do this. This is a lot of hard work but some parks will allow this to be used in the water when they will not allow any metal detectors!........VIRGIN TERRITORY......THINK ABOUT IT????..............................JOE
