I have started to make a test stick out of paint stir sticks. What should I have on the sticks? I have clad coins but what else.

Thanks for the replies, I have it about done and will use some of your ideas. The Paint sticks work great. I used 8 of them and cut each one an inch shorter that the last. Then drilled an hole in the ends and stacked them up and fastend them together with a plastic bolt. Looks alot like the one you see in the whites catalog.

Default test strip follow up

i didnt see the article on making the test strip with paint sticks, can you explain to me once the strip is made, and you swing the item say a pull tab, are the rest of the strips folded. IM assuming this puts the other targets a minimum of 20 inches away. IM surprised this doesnt cause interference unless its laid out differently than IM thinking, looking forward to your info on how to test the strip

Default test strip

well my md is a bounty hunter, as I understand it the settings, are as follows p1 through p4, or all metal, then there is a setting to accept or to reject, i thought as close as those items would be on your test strip it would cause the machine to sound off.

Just a curious question - why would you need test strips?

Joan, I made some test strips myself. It help's me to hear & see the difference in target id and pitch between good targets and junk.

Default Test Strips

I made mine from paint sticks that I got at Sears. They only will give you a couple so make the rounds to hardware stores. I used epoxy to put the item onto the stix, drilled them all equal length and loosly bolted them together. I have no problem and it is the same as the one Whites sells and they have no problems with theirs.
I have my first silver ring, a silver dime, a clad dime, a silver quarter, a clad quarter, a nickle, a indian and a memorial cent, a bottle capand a few pull tabs, No gold rings bcause they vary too much in sound and numbers on the the detecting range of most detectors.
They hit anywhere from " #8 " to " #55 ".
I once dug a gold ring at " #48*.

It really helps you to learn your signils.
Darn loose my fingers

Test strips? I just use a large piece of cardboard. Get a variety of different items, trash and treasure alike. Place each item in a ziplock bag and have someone tape them to the cardboard in various spots. Make sure you have a spot on the lawn that is cleared of all metal big enough for the cardboard. Once the objects are taped to the cardboard take it outside and flip it upside down on the cleared area of the lawn. Then using a pen write down what you think each item is on the cardboard and with a nail you can practice pinpointing. Once you think you have an item pinpointed, poke a hole through the cardboard. When you flip the carboard over you'll see how close you were and can fine tune your skills from there. Swizzle
