Default Practice, Practice, Practice

Still being somewhat new to this great hobby, I am trying to learn all the techniques needed to be successful in my hunt for coins, relics, jewelry, etc. Since I have no one in the area that I live to show me the “ropes”, I have been trying to do it on my own. I would have quickly given up this hobby if it were not for the great people here. I am continually reading just about every post on this forum every day!! Because of all of your great stories, advice that is given to each other, along with the humor that accompanies some of the post, it keeps me striving to get out and practice, practice and practice some more. I know that I will eventually “catch on” and soon hopefully I'll be posting some of my great finds. This surely is a GREAT forum!!

Default if you are now finding

metal junk, pennies, dimes, nickels and of course QUARTERS you are doing the right thing. Just try to go to places where lots of people go like parks and beaches. I was just at a park where a lot of homeless frequent and I foung sonme coins and a childs gold ring. GO TO LOTS OF DIFFERENT PLACES AND JUST DETECT. Even if you have detected an area and it is convinient DETECT IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. HOPE THIS HELPS. Oh also try to go to places that have been around for a long time so you can get old coins. HAPPY HUNTING.

Smartfox,

Thanks for the encouragement! I have only been out a few times and have had many “hits” only to dig and dig and find nothing!! I guess I just have to keep going, get more acquainted with the target ID function and, like I mentioned, practice, practice, and more practice.

I'm new along with Kestrel0222, and only been out a couple of times. I had no idea what all the beeps and numbers meant until I started swinging the detector over things. Now I know what pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters sound like. As well as pop tops, pull tabs, and bottle caps! I think I'll end up relying more on the numerical scale on mine as my hearing isn't what it used to be. I can hear the high and low beeps, but I don't think I'll be able to differentiate the subtle changes in between. I've only been to a few parks so far, but I have found about 70 cents in change barely covered, and 1 wheat penny about an inch down, and what I think is a pewter charm. Been around the edges of the parking areas, as well as in the mulch around the playgrounds. Questions: I seem to get some confusing readings getting close to the structures themselves, and I plan to start detecting in the grassy areas. Any info or tips from the experts? Thanks
