You got some real good advice from these fine people.
To kinda sum it all up they have it right.

That is a perfect place to practice.
It will improve on your skills and digging the holes. If you are happy with the way you fill them in then when you go to someone else's yard you will feel comfortable with what you do.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
Good luck

Default My home site

It is just a normal yard but I hunted it first for practice before hitting the public areas. It was built in 1935 and I have found some coins and one silver ring. I have pulled out a lot of scrap metal because the original owner was a packrat and his shed/garage burned down.

Now I have about 40 silver coins, clads,& tabs etc.buried in my detecting garden.

The silver ring is epoxyed to my paint stiring sticks that I made into a test stix.

The Evergreen sound good to me. But I have to wait for a guy to get here in the morning to fix our broken garage door. I can have coffee here if you want to run over.

Yup!

Just got my GTI Dec 29 and with the raining weather figured I'd "learn" a few things diggin up my yard. I bought the house my parents bought in 1959 and I was raised here. The back yard yielded several memorials and one 1942 wheat. Also an old pocket knife and a couple of pieces of my old toys.
Sunday I went to my old elem school playground and dug up about 98 cents in clad. Monday while at work my Dad came by to drop off some food and I showed him my new "toy". He reminded me about my sister losing her birthstone ring in a certain area of the yard in the early 1960's.
Today I had plans to go to an area where an old railroad depot was located and as I was loading the car I figured I'd give a try at my sisters ring. First hole gave up a clad dime. Second hole was a wierd tone. 4 inches down and as I flipped the clod of dirt. Boom - out pops a ring with a pretty stone. Cell phone was pulled out as quick as I could get it out to call my Mom. After discussing with my Mom and investigating the color of the stone was NOT my sisters birthstone. So off to the railroad, an hour later I had nothing there so decided to goto a fairly new ballpark and dig some clad near the concession stand. $2.94 later went on home.

Anyway the moral of my story is.... After four searches my best finds have been in my own yard.

Now I'm wondering where this sterling ring come from. And where my sisters birthstone is.

Default Search my own yard

Hi All My TH'ing Friends
Happy New Year to you and yours!

I purchased my current home from the original owner, it was built in 1972 or so. I knew there would be coins in the back yard as the previous owners had a large trampoline. I searched it with a Whites 6000 DI III and found over 100 new cents a few nickles and dimes. I proceeded to search the rest of the yard and found construction junk and nails by the bunches. To my amazement I found a 50 Cal round ball in the front yard. So far this is the only (maybe) Civil War item I have from my own yard. I say dig it all out and just make sure you do a good job of putting the grass back and stepping on it. You may also need to water the grass after to make sure it does not die.
Best of luck.

Just because your house was built in the 70's doesnt mean nothing elce has ever been there. Also, depends on how much dirt was moved or filled. My house was built in the 40's, but there was a lot of fill dirt not to mention junk like aluminum screed from the siding. But i did find some silver and wheats at the edges of where the fill ended. As far as pipes, dont know where you live, but most of the pipes the detector might pick up (gas, water and elec) in my area would be far too deep for motion mode to pick up. You can move your disc up to just pick up coins (cherry pick +65 and above) and most of the junk will disappear.

I've got a little over 5 acres which use to be part of a large ranch. I hunt it all the time, nothing like a little quick detecting fix to put you in a good mood. Havn't found anything of value, lot of rust but I have cleaned all the nails out of my driveway and parking area..
