Default Dig your own gems

I have been watching the new show on the Travel channel about finding lost treasure. My question is - is there some place where I can go to find a directory of places to mine my own gems? I did a google search and came up with a few. Has anyone here dug their own? Are they as easy to find as the TV show makes them out to be? Would be interested in hearing any stories or suggestions that you guys and gals might have. Also any places you might suggest where I could go to do this. Thanks in advance. JoAnne

search engine, and a whole bunch of sites came up, one was the Discovery Channel. Do a search for 'Dig Your Own Gems' on this site, and print the 3 page article.

That is so cool RIP. I have been to the Herkimer Diamond Mines but only in the gift shop. Arrived late in the day - too late to dig. So tell me - should I quit my job and go gem hunting?

Sure why not ! Just dont forget to bring your detector as you will probably need all the extra funds you can get ! I know a guy that owns a mine in Herkimer and mines them on weekends. I sold some small ones last year on Ebay and got $5-$10 each.

I am definitely going to have to give Herkimer Diamonds a try but this time I will have to get there earlier. Don't think I should quit my day job yet but retirement is looking better and better all the time. Maybe I could retire and mine? Now there is a thought.

Thanks for the Info Joe. I am seriously considering retiring and traveling around looking for gems. Might as well put my time to good use instead of sitting in front of the TV. Am keeping all the info I find in a large notebook for future use. I will add your info to it also. Thanks again.
