Default Learned A Lot In 1 Day Detecting Property

Went to front yard yesterday and detected. Found mostly junk and 1 penny. Only did it for 25 minutes. YOU GUYS WERE RIGHT. I LEARNED A WHOLE LOT. I tore up a spot a little bit trying to cut the grass and flipping it. Then I got a knife, pinpointed the area and stabbed the area and went around with my fingers under the grass and foind a little buckle and a couple of junk. it was really cool.

QUESTION: I used to only go to places where there was sand or dirt to detect but I see it can also be done over grass. Are there better possibilities to find older stuff under the grass than dirt? IT SEEMS TO ME AS THE ANSWER BEING YES since maybe that place could of been dirt before 10, 20, 50 years ago then they just put grass and there is all that stuff there that fell and it is still under the grass. LET ME KNOW. I AM STILL REAL NEW AT THIS. THANKS

In my opinion you answered you own question.

"IT SEEMS TO ME AS THE ANSWER BEING YES"
When you flip the grass back over make sure you step on it a few times to compact it, that gives it a better chance of recovering itself.

Yeah, I am little scared to start digging on grass areas just yet, dont want to catch holy hell. Going to try a freshwater beach on a local lake today.

my first post, but cut the top grass off as you would to transplant it, cant do it any harm, replace back in same spot after digging, think of you self as Johnny Appleseed it will grow even better

I have always cut a horseshoe shaped flap and folded it back. This gives you the chance to pinpoint whether it is in the flap or in the hole. After you are done place the dirt back in the hole and fold the flap back to the hole and as Boobie said just step on it a couple of times to secure it. I have been doing this for years and when I am done no one knows I was ever there and the grass grows great!

I agree with PA Bill the only thing I would add is take an old towel or a piece of plastic. When you dig out the hole (after doing the horse shoe shape) put the dirt on the towel or plastic. That way after you find your target you can neatly put all the dirt back into the hole before you step on the plug. That allows there to be no dirty brown grass that will give your digging spot away. Happy hunting. JoAnne

PS If you have a big enough towel or plastic you can also use a corner of it to kneel on which will make the person who does the laundry a whole lot happier.
