Default My first finds using a metal detector

Hello All,
Just got my metal detector yesterday. This morning I found a screwtop for a beer bottle, a piece of pottery, a piece of glass, a four inch long screw, an unidentifiable object, and last but not least, an old stilletto knife still open. I will post my finds on here after I finish restoring the knife to working condition. It has an ivory handle and about a 1/2 " of rust covering the blade and caked dirt in the opening where the knife folds into the handle. It was buried about 6" in the ground and I was using All Metal mode.

I am currently using a Bounty Hunter Pioneer Ex, and the stilletto is just a classic folding pocket knife. I have a few switch blades laying around the house somwhere however.

The stilletto knife I found the other day has been restored to perfect working condition and all rust and mud has been removed and I will post a pic on here just as soon as my wife can show me how to load them on here. It's not in the best condition with all the pits from years of corrosion and the handles are separating from the case but the knife now at least opens and closes with ease and I should be able to put the edge back on the blade. Over all it's a decent pocket knife to have considering it's been in the ground for at least 20-30 years.

Default POTTERY and GLASS?

I don't understand how a metal detector can respond to Pottery and Glass! They are non-conductive, and a Metal Detector depends on eddy currents induced in CONDUCTIVE metal objects to generate the response signal!

Well Hal,
That's all very true, but however when the objects in question are in the ground next to the objects that do conduct current, i.e. nails or the knife. It is possible to accidently dig up the pottery and the piece of glass which is exactly what had happened. the knife was right under the pottery and glass and when I dug the hole I first pulled out the pottery and then another inch down was the glass and the knife was another 2 inches down. If you recall, the knife was 6 inches down in the ground and I was using all depth sensory. Thanks for the question.
