Default Why & How

Sorry Pappy...(for being a lil late)

But I joined after created this thread...

Anyways, my best buddie that I have known and worked with for the past 20 years is a walking history book on the Civil, and Revolutionary Wars...As a matter of fact he joined a Revolutionary War Reinactment Group last year...We always hooked up together, whether it be hunting, fishing, going to military gun shows, or visiting historic sites, and where I live in southern NJ, we have loads of historic sites...He mentioned in one of our discussions that his grandfather actually made 2 metal detectors with his electronics background, they were crude, but worked...And he would tell me of the items that his grandfather had found, and that stuck with me for years. Well, I have a few hobbies, those being wood working, collecting old WWII military weapons, shooting them at the range I belong to, and occassionaly getting in some fresh and salt water fishing...I dont have the heart to whack any critters anymore, so I gave up hunting...Anyways, probably in the 80's I received information in the mail from Whites which included a video of their products (VHS Tape)...and maybe watched it once, but never gave it all that much thought...I did read the articles of the finds from people around the country and that kind of stuck in my mind...Now that i'm retired I've found the perfect hobby to get me out of my ole easy, put down the remote, and get out there swinging my PrismV...I'm pleased as punch as to how well it works for me, for what I use it for, and am fascinated when a coin pops out of the ground, thinking, one of these days I WILL find one of those old buggers...Ok..I got a little off track here but thats basically how I got started...Only wish I got into it years ago...

I had always thought about metal detecting but never tried it. My wife bought me a Garrett for Christmas 2004 and I've been hooked since. I started mding my yard and found dozens of clad coins and then branched out to other family members' yards. I hunt alone most of the time but recently have hooked up with a buddy (Lawrence) with whom I hunt with some now. In the past 4-5 months I have really gotten a better feel for my machine and have a lot more confidence in the hunting I do.

Default Christmas gift

Santa brought the boys a toy detector this past Christmas... I ended up liking it as much as they did; so we upgraded to a Bounty Hunter. This past week my wife got me my own detector (an Ace 250).

You know, I think I enjoy the research as much as the detecting. Our PA history is rich and exciting! I can't wait until it warms up a bit so we can go out and detect at some of these places we have been scouting and reading about.

I always wanted a metal detector because I was interested in old coins and history but I never got around to actually buying one. Then, about 3 years ago, my dad bought me one for Christmas. I was pretty excited and once the ground thawed, I was all over the place with this thing. What really sealed the deal for me was when I found my first really old silver. It was a 1906 Baber Dime. I know that you all are familiar with that feeling. You dig your hole and out pops a piece of history that hasn't seen the light of day in (almost 100 years in my case). It is like going back in time. An unbelievable feeling. So... I am hooked for life.

I saw an older fellow out of my front window one day, he was on his knees digging up a plug between the sidewalk and street. I went out to see what he was doing. He explained as he pulled out a silver dime. I let him go through my yard for a bit and he found a shell casing and a silver quarter. This has got me interested. But it wasn't until about 20 yrs. later that I happened to be in a new sporting good store, and came across a display of bounty hunters of varying grades and decided how much interest would I really have in this hobby. Buy an expensive one? bottom line model? I settled for a mid line for about $300. Didn't know much, but taught myself through hours of hunting. I haven't looked back since and am still learning each time out. To bad I didn't read "Metal Detecting for Dummies" LOL. but through experience you gain knowledge, and I try to learn something every time out. Darn this obsession.
