on the sandy playground, dirt, or grass? I'm a little hessitant to do grass because it would look weird if someone saw me at a park with a knife cutting the grass. Someone might call the authorities on me or something like that. I will probably try it one early morning at a park when no one is watching me. I JUST WANTED A LITTLE FEEDBACK ON WHAT TYPE OF TERRAIN YOU GUYS HAVE THE MOST LUCK WITH.

Most of my better "in the park" finds are near the kid's playground; but not actually on the playground itself, instead I concentrate on the 50-60' radius around the playground. That's where I find the most coins, but they're usually modern clad. Once in awhile a ring or piece of jewelry will show up, too.
Instead I look for trails and brushy areas surrounding the main park areas. Today's folks head to the park for a quick visit to the main areas, then retreat to their PlayStations. In years past, parks were for all day adventures such as hiking, swimming, fishing, all day ball games and picnics. People would meander all over the parks. If you really look closely, you'll find traces of those old trails, campsites and picnic areas. This is where you'll have fewer finds, but the chance to find some old coins and treasures. Plus, it's way more peaceful in the "boonies". Dick

Something I have started doing since taking up metal detecting is looking at parks on a busy Saturday afternoon and see where people are hanging out. Drive by a ball park and look where people are sitting during a ball game. Check out a soccer game and see where the onlookers sit. Look at any major events in your city and watch the crowds. Once you kinda figure out these patterns it will be the about same at most parks and gathering places. You will be surprised, this will start to come naturally to you the more you get into detecting.

I like to metal detect the grassy area's of my local city park. However the park is VERY small and is home to an annual fair. Just about all the grassy area is used up during the fair and I know that people have to lose stuff. The next time the fair is held in the park again, I will go to it just to scout out where the ticket booths are located... people will drop money onto the ground when retrieving money for a ticket purchase. I will also look where people stand in line at the food booths. These are the area's that will have a larger amount of coinage.
This past Sunday, I went metal detect a different (small) park near home. I hunted the playground part of this park many weeks ago with not much luck at all, however I decided to hunt a different area, near the baseball fields, which are located near the railroad tracks. Well, in this area I was having much better success than the playground area weeks ago... then as I looked around I saw where cars would have parked when people went to watch the baseball games. This area is now off limits to cars, since the road is blocked. The old parking lot is grass now, but when I started digging I realized it was once a gravel parking lot. Good thing I had one of my heavy duty digging tools with me, which is the only way I was able to get through the tough gravel. I got a good signal in one spot and dug the ground to find a penny... then before I filled the hole back in I used the Vibra-Probe to scan the hole again... it vibrated! This time I pulled out a quarter from the hole. Back in with the Vibra-Probe revealed yet another vibration... this time another penny. About two inches away from the hole I found two more pennies stuck together, but came apart with ease. One more try with the Vibra-Probe found yet one more penny.... making that a total of six coins in one (larger) hole... adding up to 30 cents. I also found a silver earring in that same parking lot.

For clad...most of my finds in parks has come from the areas around the concession stands (if the parks have one). I guess it is from people coming and going from getting drinks or snacks. I have alos done pretty good around the bleachers.
