Default Going to a Beach with a big Surge

I think that's what they call it SURGE. It is a strange beach because there is like 1/2 a mile where the sand up to the shore is regular but when you get closer to the shore there is like a 10 foot drop. Would it be good to detect there? IS IT THAT THE BEACH HAS EATEN ITSELF OUT AND THERE IS LOTS OF OLDER STUFF THERE? I AM GOING TO SEARCH THE COAST. LET ME KNOW.

Default Thanks

Never Thought Of That One. Good Info Indeed. Luckily There Are Very Minor Waves In Florida At Least Where I Am From. Now At Winter The Waves Are A Bit Stronger. They Are Strong Enough Now That I Cannot Take My Detector In 1/2 Way But I Think I Would Be Okay At The Shore Unless A Tsunami Was To Happen Then I Would Be In Real Trouble.

Default Your right on

I've only seen a big drop off like that once on Topsail Island NC. It was after 3 continuous days of a NE storm. Most of the time there will be a 30" drop off(surge) after a NE storm. It is a great place to detect even if someone else was there first. Metal detecting is so much like fishing, since you never can be sure where you'll find them. IF you can catch an outgoing tide search at various distances from the drop off. After you find your first coin be sure to circle the hole at least two or three times. Your objective is to find where the
current and tide has deposited a large group of them. Its funny but you can
find a group of 50 coins in an unsuspected area, but just go another yard
in any direction and nothing. I guess thats why I like fishing and metal detecting so much. This method always found groups of coins toward the
ocean away from the surge. It will always be productive if your out early
after a storm has caused the surge. Just remember that they may not collect in the area that looks the most likely. I also found that the probability of finding rings in an group of coins like this goes way up. So
get excited when you get a foil hit in a group like this.

I watched a special on TLC a while back regarding treasure hunting. The show was interviewing folks that hit Florida beaches after a big storm. People picked up gold coins, a gold box, and many other items that were from sunken ships. There is also a boat tour where you pay x number of dollars. Then all the folks on the ship divide up the find.
