Default Ace 250 Questions

Okay, I'm 3 hours in on my Ace 250 (thanks again Chuck!) and here are my first impressions:

* This thing blows away my BH 1100 insofar as finding deeper stuff. The Ace found three coins (quarter, dime, penny) in a tight 1x1' area of my back yard where I'd already hunted a few times with the BH.

* Went to a ballfield and didn't have much luck. Muddy infield and hard-packed outfield not helped by recent cold weather (I'm in NY). I worked the shallow outfield with the 'coins' setting and dug up a few pieces of iron and the back of a button. Maybe this ballfield just stinks.

* I absolutely LOVE the pinpoint feature! Hehe... dunno how I lived without it.

Couple quick newbie-type questions for anyone who can help me out...

First, do you guys/gals mostly dig good solid-tone targets? (by this I mean a target that shows the same exact signature after a few passes). I noticed some targets show as a 25-cent piece on the fore swipe, a 10-cent piece on the back-swipe, and then I see the IRON bar light up and stuff like that. That's junk, right?

I tossed a penny, a dime, and a quarter onto the ground to try and see what signatures they showed as. The Ace rocked each one of them perfectly with strong tones that were the same on each pass. Is this what I should be looking for?

If I'm in a ballfield or park I definitely want to find dropped change, but I also obviously would like to find lost jewelry too. So do I pick the 'coins' or the 'jewelry' setting? Or do I pick 'all metal' and deal with the junk?

I know it's gonna take practice (and digging and digging and digging) to 'learn' this detector, and already I feel I'm better with it than I was 3 hours ago. But any help to speed me along would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Default You are right on

Your thinking is right on. I have found that with mine if the signal is jumping all over it is usually junk. Depends on where I am hunting as to what mode I hunt in. In a newer city park for instance I use the jewelry mode. An old homestead I use the all metal. But I will always dig any strong signal that repeats from a couple of directions.

Alot of times I dig all signals, mostly the jumpy ones are junk, but I've heard people say that sometimes the jumpy or iffy signals turn out to be something good, and I don't want to pass up something great. Then usually I'll get tired and be more selective as to what signal I'll dig.
I use the coins mode, because i'm just more use to the tones and what they are telling me, but I really need to try the other modes.....I could be missing some things. Good Luck with your hunting and just keep practicing !

If you are looking for change, use the coins mode. The Jewelry mode is going to add the ability for rings, but also brings in the pull tabs. You will get pull tabs even in the coins mode, but not as many.

The Sensitivity setting is what I had the most problem with. Higher is not always deeper. With the GB preset, if you turn the sense up to 5 or 6, you may be picking up minerals in the soil. 3 to 4 is a good starting point, and keep the coil close to the ground.

The Ace is a great coin shooter, but it's circuitry isn't the best for jewelry (not for me anyways).

That's great news, thats the positive review I want to hear. I have been scared that an Ace would be no better then my BH 1100 I've been asking my wife if I can have one she, says your gonna have to save up your finds well I'm keeping my treasure. Being a Welder I am saving all my tips ,nozzles and cones the copper I am only $86.00 away from that awsome yellow machine.

"Then usually I'll get tired and be more selective as to what signal I'll dig"

Hehehehe... you hit the nail on the head Indy, because this is exactly what I did yesterday. Dug my hands raw for the first two hours, but on the third hour I was a lot more selective.

One more question: can I still find coins in jewelry mode? I guess anything's possible, just figured I'd ask. Thanks!

Yup, Shakakka, you will still find the coins in Jewelry Mode as well as Relics and All Metal. Of course there are more signals to decipher as well, but that's where you'll find jewelry and relics, and pulltabs, and beer cans, and rusty iron and .........you know what I mean

Default Ace 250

Shakakka, I have had my 250 for some time now and have found that you can do most ANYTHING you want to with it as far as settings.

I search in the coin mode after setting my sensetivity to about 3-4 bars and I discrim out everything but Nic's., Dime's, Quarters, Half's and pull tabs.

When in the coin mode your rings will show up as a solid pull-tab. I'm not really concerned in pennies so I discrim them out.

Try this set up and see what you can find.

That's solid advice Pappy, thanks. Gonna try everything you said. Now if only it wasn't 17-degrees outside....
