Default General Question

I have been wondering a few things, since I have been researching this hobby.

1. Who do you ask at public schools / other places if you can hunt.

2. How exactly do you ask? I would think this would be an awkward thing to ask.

3. Are there any places that are sort of common grounds that you don't need official permission?

4. Are there any Ghost Towns where you can just climb out and swing?

As you can see, I'm very green, but I don't want to do anything illegal or immoral. Any help is appreciated.

Default hello pris

alway's ask...if it be a park...there are rangers to ask...and if it is a school, go to the office...and if it is private, research for the owner...because if you don't you could be charged with trespassing...and you don't want that for sure...usally parks in some states don't mind as long as you fill in the hole-still ask...and there is a primission sheet you could take to them, for you and them to sign, and case you trip and break something and want to sueeeee...thats the biggest thing anymore...everybody wants to sue...maybe i can find you that sheet an e-mail it to you for permission...good luck and hope i helped you somehow...

Hi Pris...

Welcome to TQ...I see your hooked already...As for myself, I'm fairly new at this hobby also, but to hopefully answer a few of your questions, which by the way crossed my mind too...Speaking from a couple of my own experiences, I do know for a fact the beaches by the ocean are FREEBIES...I did stop at Lake/beach/playground area and first checked out the Ranger station and one of the Rangers broke out his little rules & regulations pamphlet and showed me, Positively NO MD'ing on the property...To keep it short, it was an Insurance and Political Issue thing....In NJ, to my knowledge, the state lands that hold historical value are definately off limits to MD'ing...Schools, parks, playgrounds etc etc, to be on the safe side, I would definately ask for permission, when in doubt..Ask...You might approach schools, municipal buildings and the like, and just "Ask" outright, tell them what your intensions are, and the worse they can say is "NO", correct...? I'm sure other folks here can give you a more in depth explanation as to state, county, township, and local laws regarding Metal Detecting...Good luck anyways, hope to see some of your finds...

Default Thanks!

Thanks for the help! If you can find that permission sheet, that would be a great thing to have. Thanks, Ranger!

Boobird, great idea about the municipal building. It seems a bit daunting because I don't know where to start. I live in a pretty snooty area where the schools are very protective and everyone is suspicious. Everything is so spread out and the community isn't really a community.

I'll do some major research and figure out who to ask.
