I saw a good deal on a used Garrett GTAX 500. I just bought a new ACE 250 for $190.
I thought I would buy the GTAX as well then if I like one better over another I would sell one of these on eBay. Well, Garrett has a great tool on their web site. You can compare any brand Garrett with another Garrett. To my amazement the ACE 250 have more features than the GTAX 550. Looking at the comparison on this chart really does not compel me to purchase the used GTAX 550. The only thing that is not shown on the chart is GTAX has "Graphic Target Analyzer (GTA) " technology. It talks about it having "pinpoint mode" but the ACE has that as well. It seems the major benefit is a hip battery pack. Click the PDF link below if are interested in reading it. http://www.surfthru.com/help/CompareAce.pdf Regards, Patrick |

The notch segments are broken into 24 instead of 12 on the Ace. Makes for finer discrimination. Plus it has audio threshold to help find smaller targets the Ace might miss. I believe Garrett says it will go deeper also.
