Default Garrett GTAx 550 Results - First Time out for me

Well the ground finally thawed here in Michigan.

I tested my GTAx 550 when the ground was frozen solid a few weeks ago but today was my first day out where I was able to dig.

To me, a novice in this game I found the GTAx 550 to be very good.

Here is what I found using this unit.

1. The pinpointing function was right on each time. I found the depth and the location to be right on the money.
2. The visual id showed a bottle cap at 8 inches. I dug just to find out. Well 8 inches down I found a Budwiser cap.
3. The next tone was a pull tab 5 inches down. I pinpointed it, dug, and found a pull tab.
4. The last signal was a penny around 4 inches down. I dug a plug and then used my $15.00 Wizard pin pointer and found the penny.

I do not have any great finds to report except that the Garrett GTAx 550 worked well. This is a very relaxing hobby. It seems like all the cares of the world go away.

Wink

sounds like so much fun- getting the garrett 550 is a few days and looking forward to pinpoint stuff. I now have a bounty hunter- not much to it, hard to pinpoint with it, have to do it manually, bigger holes, now I can dig smaller ones. Always put back but hate to dig so big. Cangrats- looking forward to what you find.

Hi didijim,

Funny thing. The next day I go out and I get a couple of strong Quater visuals on the ID and Tones. I dig up only to find twice, a flattened out beer cap.

I am going to see how this things works on the beach in Florida next week. If I get more caps as quaters someone may find themself a nice GTAx 550 washing up on shore.

Regards,
Patrick

Default Hey Patrick....

......the meter should be the secondary source of decision making! The brain with input from the ears should always be first!

GoldDigger,

That Wizard Pinpointer, is it the Little Wizard II or the "Pistol looking" one?

Does it seem to detect all types of metal? I had read that the Little Wizard II was good for nails (as intended), but had problems with other non-ferrous metals. I was thinking of getting one for utility/backup purposes.

Thanks!

Good luck in Florida.

If you decide to give it the deep six. Just mail it to me and I will dispose of it properly.

The one I used was the small black one, not the yellow pistol. I found that it can detect a quarter (a real one not a beer cap) in the dirt at around 2 inches.

I also bought the yellow pistol one but it did not get here yet. They sell on Amazon for about $25.00. If you have a ACE 250 it would match well.

When the indicator is ringing quarters like they are falling from heaven, and the bell tone says the same, all one can do is dig and find out.

What I learned with some input from Boobie was that the detector looks at size also, so it makes sense that it rang up like a quarter. If nothing else it was a lessened learned and that is a good thing.
