    Charlotte Gold Plentiful

    Hey James

I looked into it a long time ago, for something to do in Charlotte, on my days off work. Never got a chance to do much with it though.

The first gold found in the US was found at the Reed Mine close to you: Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site

I understand it's still a nice hobby down there with lots of places to look.

    Thanks :wavey:

Gold prospecting is one of my new year's resolutions...never have done it - but really want to give it a shot...both with a MD and panning...good luck!

Oh, by the way - I hear that a lot of people still pan for gold in northern Georgia...quite a large strike in the area years ago...

HL you know I have'nt forgotten about you, I just been trying to get use to the new machine..you should see my back yard..went out this morning and dug a few holes 1 @ 11" the other at 18", tried different coins a dime, penny, nickel and quarter..HL I found out we have some tuff mineral red clay around here The 11" hole 15' from the other hole did'nt give much of a signal even with the GB set..I picked the Dime up at 16" good signal and pinpointed at 16" which I'm thinking is maxx reading In JE mode at 95 sense, at 18" with dirt over it it was faded and kinda made a noise but no Visual, swapped over to all metal which gives out a constant buzz and picked it up at 18"....very impressive..Its a little noisey..picks up alot I tested all the 6 modes and both coils just to get a feel. The small coil depth is very impressive..I still got lots to learn..Its a totally different animal..It should be a great Relic hunter. It loves old rusted steel..It even has a bottle cap mode..Then my wife came home and I had to repair the yard real fast..I'll give you a Buzz..james

First, I would suggest looking where it is documented that gold was found. There are several publications and websites listing locations where gold was found in NC. In those steams you can stick your coil down in the water and detect around rocks. Just don't submerge the controls if the unit is not an underwater model.

You can also use that method and also what I suggest in the next paragraph, but the chances of finding a missed quartz vein with gold in documented streams is very remote.

There are probably some undiscovered deposits in undocumented streams. Many streams were not properly prospected in the the early 1800's. No one in America had much if any experience mining gold then and some areas were entirely missed as there is abundance of small streams. While using a metal detector in or along streams that aren't document to have gold, your second best bet is to look for viens of quartz running near or down into the water. These may be narrow stringers sandwiched between other rock formations or in wide bands. Banks and surrounding hillsides with exposed quartz bolders or quartz veins above the water may be the actual deposit location. Gold is often found in quartz stringers.

    Sample me.

If you like paydirt I can help you. My dirt comes from Northern Arizona near Wickenburg which is known for nuggets of gold. I make you pay $4.00 for shipping, but my sample paydirt is not 2 x 2 but instead a half pound. Give it a try.

    Gold in Charlotte, NC

Every creek in Charlotte has some gold. I have cataloged 50 mines in the city limits. Several have been grown over or have houses on them. You should be able to find some pieces of gold with your machine. Since I am a prospector first, I use the Fisher Gold Bug 2. Higher operating frequency. I'll send youa message, and maybe we can hunt together. Also you always need to have a gold pan with you.

Gold is where you find it. I would start where it has already been found and go from there. Black sand is heavy and so is gold, they like to follow the same streak. It does not mean where you find black sand that you will find gold. But if you find gold you will more than likly find black sand. Always take a gold pan on these outings to test the waters so to speak.
    good luck.
