Is there such thing anymore (still setting over the pit), or they more uncommon than hens-teeth? Does anyone ever "hunt" them"? If so, what's your "method" of say retrieving bottles from them? Thanks Smitty
I actually know people back home that still have them. I have never even thought of hunting at one? Back home some are still in use. Good luck to you with that, Beale.
Check this out in this forum. It might help.this is on the front page of this site..Buster..... Antique Bottle Talk
Hey Smitty, have you found one that your keeping for yourself, lol. I used to hunt the old ones, not used in many many years with my dad. I dont think I'd want to hunt one that is still standing . Terri
Out Houses YES, There are such things still left. The ones that are still standing ( and in use) are the one's you DON'T want to hunt...When searching old property always look toward the back of the house for indentations in the ground or where bushes and weeds are growing taller than others..Search ( Probe) these spots and you can come up with some really good finds.:spin:
I have researched some of the properties here in my town. fiunding areas were privys once stood. Check out the origanal plot plan of the property some show the outhouses. It takes a ton of digging or a small back hoe to get down to the good stuff. But can be worth lots to do it. Best of luck.:wavey:
lol, Terri....no, I'm not Boggartin' a privy :spin: Here's why I asked. I had an idea for an extendable "gripper" that could extend from say 6-12 feet & would be able to handle a soda, whiskey, or mason sized bottle/jar. I wasn't sure if there were old privies (no longer used) that people shined a flashlight into & could search them that way.......kinda like shinin' for 'coon  If you looked down, saw a nice bottle, could (lol, or would) you "fish" it out? Smitty
I have a special system already designed for you Terri, it consists of a rope slipped over yout ankles, and a pulley that allows me to lower you into the pit to grab the booty :bthumb: Smitty
lol....Terri are not only hunting buddies, but friends as well, so we've been known to :duel:alittle now & then....all meant in good fun  Smitty
Be careful Smitty,If I go ,You go,and we'll be wishing for a cell phone :mean: . All in good fun  . Terri
cant wait to get back to Galena and check out the one behind my grandparent's farm house! the structure is gone but im sure there are some " goodies " there!
The ones around here thats still standing because :multiI was onry in my younger days) those were the ones we didn't get to. We would load them up on Halloween night and put it under the stop light in the middle of main street. (We only have one stop light in town) You should have seen the look on the faces :yikesf the street dept. guys when the door opened up and one of us would run out of it & down the street.:bthumb:
LOL! I can imagine that growing up in a small town myself with only one stoplight. A couple of these:yikes::yikes: followed closely by these :cussing:. Only problem with a small town is there is NO HIDING.
I don't know, sounds like a crappy job to me. I can here you now..." this stinks". It would not be the #1 thing to do on my list, it would definately be #2. Rob
Privies Hi! I am new to this so please bare with me. When I was younger my dad knew where there was some farm houses (abandoned) We got permission to look for the outhouse and once we found it we dug. Found lots of glass and pewter plate but not much else. From what I understand :multi:it was common practice to through trash in it as well as behind it in a hole. As A child I was fasinated as I still am now.
