Default Sunday's finds

This is an arrowhead my husband found and some pottery I found Sunday.
Looks like it might be a gary point not real sure? WVaTom...You seem to have alot of knowledge on these things so was wondering if you might have some information about the point by just looking at the picture. It is a real rough one so we are thinking it must be an older one. Looks like it is made from iron-ore. Hope the pictures are clear.

Thanks for any info you might have!
If anyone else might know anything about this point would like to hear from ya!
Pat

I do not know the pottery shards but I know the point.. Looks like a roughed in Gary to me but it may be a finished product of an earlier era. All the Garys I have found are flint. I have one bird point that looks like a perfect spade (as in Cards) and a little red point that is flint that is a perfect little cross. I normally only find Garys around here though..

James those 2 you mention sound awesome! Love to see them! We do have alot of the Gary points around here they say if you find one there will be many! This is what I have heard. Most that I have found we have traveled a good hour away and this point was found close to home. With finding the pottery maybe this is were they camped! Hopefully we will find more!

Cool Rossville stemmed point but they..

may go by a different name there.1500 b.c to 800 a.d. may also go by the name piscataway/corapeake stemmed points. i dont think it is hematite as hematite does not chip apart. looks more like quartzite, chist or rhyolite. Gary point seems to have a flat base as opposed to the rounded one in the pic. but i can never be sure as some are so alike. Gary point seems to come from Arkansas/Texas area. is that where you live? if so Gary would be right. i am just guessing and am by no means a expert.

my info comes from the book "A guide to the Identification of Virginia Projectile points" by Wm Jack Hranicky and Floyed Painter

Hunt County Texas here.. South Sulphur River area. I found all mine about ten minutes from my house!! Thing is with all the rain we have been having, the river IS NOT a good place to be right now!! I have seen that thing jump its banks for over five hundred yards each way and stay that way for days. That along with the Blackland mud makes for being stuck up to your doors if you are not careful. Especially if you are close to the river. The mud there is finer grained and easier to get stuck in. Nothing at all like the Red Clay a little futher North near the Red River.

All mine are in the riverbed.. Just where the river turns and goes south a little ways. The part of the river I hunt in is more of a creekbed than riverbed. It is only about 50 feet across and roughly 20 feet deep and all points are found in the same vincity. The water running through there normally would be about six inches deep but right now it is about 25. That is not counting the holes and pooled water. They exceed 8-10 feet deep and vary in diameter and length. The hole I am having problems with is roughly 20 feet wide, about 8 feet deep and 15 yards long. It is right past where I find all my arrowheads and I know several have washed into it. Thing is, even in the summertime, this hole never dries.
