Thanks Terri.. I've been Dixieldy almost 20 years on the net
So, do you randomly pick fields to hunt and ask permission to look in the field? I have never asked permission to do that before. I did hunt a field many years ago my boyfriend at the time and myself. No-one ever run us out and I found plenty of them. Can you just look at a field and tell it has arrowheads in it? Just curious.. we use to have plenty here on our property but over the years it's been picked clean.

Hi Sonja, I always try and ask permission, but if the field is hidden from public view and I cannot find anyone to ask I have hunted. I have drove by a few fields with my hunting partner I plan on asking permisson to hunt this spring, course it doesnt hurt there were schools on the same ground .
When I lived down south I hunted along the river bottoms and never failed to come home with a few finds. Ive not been as fortunate here in Indiana, yet. Terri |

Hi Echo. That's a beautiful point. I'm definately no expert in IDing types either, but in looking to identify it I am leaning toward it being a Beacon Island. It is a late archaic to early woodland point. 4000-3000 B.P.
Have you ever seen the "Official Overstreet Identification and Price Guide to Indian Arrowheads" ? I'm not sure just how often they are published (maybe every two years?) but I have found mine to be the most helpful for identifying types. It has them by region and tells all related types to help narrow down your search. It is a bit pricey, about $24 but I got mine from a discount bookseller for $17. It's well over 1100 pages and is a great book for anyone interested in arrowheads. |

You're very welcome.
Even tho I don't really care too much about the monetary value of points it can come in handy if you're looking to purchase. It's also got 10s of thousands of pictures of arrowheads from all over the US. You should be able to find one at most any large chain bookstore and some catalogs. There are many different versions of price guides but that one is the most comprehensive in my opinion. For your (our) are there is one called "Indian Artifacts of the Midwest" by Lar Hothem. There are several different editions of it and you can even have pictures of your artifacts published in it at no cost to you. I know, I did it several years ago. I don't know if you still would, but at that time you got a first edition sent to you as soon as it came out if your pictures were published. The last edition of this I saw is by his biggest and best being all color and beautiful and still less than $30. |
