Hey chicken_little,
I think you misunderstood Toadie (James) when he mentioned digging.....he was talking about digging while swinging a metal detector. He's NOT digging for Indian Artifacts! Or did I misunderstand you? Is it Illegal to dig in Indiana while swinging a metal detector? If so, That S*%#s! Happy Looking, Swinging & Digging, HH, Roger

For the record, I never dug into any mound except for once with my father. Then it was completely accidental. No one knew they were there until we dug into 'em. When Dad and I spotted the arrowheads and pottery we stopped the backhoe, taped the area off and we reported it to the county and the state. My father was the Director of Public Works at East Tawakoni, TX and also the Water and Sewer Superintendent at the time and we were laying a pipeline for West Tawakoni and Lone Oak over at Wind Point Park, following the surveyed and marked route. That was when we ran into the mounds. They actually did not look like mounds at all, almost level with the surrounding ground to be honest. We re-routed the pipeline and bypassed the mounds and the state came in and did a partial excavation to determin the tribe the mounds belonged to. I think area is still off limits today, but all along the beaches of Lake Tawakoni, it is not uncomon to find arrowheads. The Lake was named after the local Indians who used to live there.
But raw-war-digger was right. I was talking about swinging a detector and digging plugs (actually, lately bricks).

my bad, I misunderstood you. Although I think in texas it is legal to dig for artifacts.
In indiana the law says that if while digging you find an indian artifact you must stop immediately and report it to the proper authorities or you will be fined up to $100,000. It doesn't define "indian artifact", so simply an arrowhead counts. So if your trying to build that dream home on top of an old indian camp site (not a mound or burial place) and you come across some artifacts, no more dream home for you. I dont think any contractors or home-builders even know about the law, but its on the books. |
