Default First arrowhead

Was out looking for a can dump yesterday, stopped to admire the view and when I looked down could not believe my eyes.. This little guy was right there on top of the ground like it had been dropped yesterday. Actually took a second before the brain went WOW ARROWHEAD.. Kind of a strange feeling to think I'm the first one to touch it since the guy who made it..
Been looking for one since I was a kid, now I have my first...

Arrowhead is made of obsidian and is about 1 3/4 inches long and 1 inch wide.
I'm still in a state of wonderment over the craftmanship in this piece. There are actual serrations along the edges. Looks like they were made by taking flakes from the edges to the center.
No obsidian around here locally, all lava here, but to the north of me about fifty miles is a place called Glass Mountain. The entire top of the mountain is huge outcrops of of obsidian. When the sun catches the outcrops and the pieces that have flaked off the whole area sparkles.
This area was the home of the Pit Indians, so named for their habit of digging pits for game to fall into, as well as the dumb whiteman. Local group were the Achumawi..
More info than you wanted to know probably.... Bob

Never too much info! That is a really nice point. Do you have a picture of it showing it dead on instead of at a angle?

Default little more info for ya !

The territory of the Achumawi included nearly all of the lands along the westward-flowing Pit River.
Early European American settlers in northeastern California noted numerous pitfalls along animal trails in the area. From these pitfalls, dug by the Indians to trap deer, the settlers named the Pit river and subsequently called the Achumawi the Pit River Indians. Deer were abundant in northeastern California and provided the Achumawi with a plentiful supply of venison as well as deerskin for the manufacture of quivers, caps, capes, skirts, belts, moccasins, and leggings.
The life cycle of the Achumawi included an elaborate puberty ceremony for girls and a somewhat more modest affair for boys. Marriage was accompanied by an exchange of gifts between the two families, regarded as a form of mutual purchase. Death was the occasion of great mourning. Close relatives of the deceased shaved their hair and covered their heads with pitch. The body and all the personal property of the dead were burned.
Shamans played a key role in Achumawi culture. They obtained their healing ability from their tamakomi, variously translated as "medicine" or "power." About half of all Achumawi shamans were women.

Here's a better shot for you Oberkill, tried to get as much detail as possible.
**** Rip, ya dun your homework.. You have my area pretty well nailed down.
It mentioned that there are deer in the area. We have mostly Mule Deer around here, they migrate in mid September, spend the winter here on what's called "The Bench" and then leave again mid May for the high country.
The picture is one of my friends that wandered into the backyard last fall. No, I didn't shoot him, season just closed anyway, but they are so large and so beautiful even though I get a deer tag every year it's usually just for a two week walk in the woods.. Gettin old and tender I guess..
Took a friend hunting with me last Fall. We were walking around a lake and watching a family of coyote playing on the opposite side. He turns around to me and asks "Ummm you deer huntin?
"Yeah, why?"
"Your rifle is still in the jeep."
"Details."
Thanks for showing an interest... Bob
