Can someone help identify this stone. It measures 2" 7/8 x 2"1/4.
found along the scioto river. I am not sure if it is a ordinary rock or a type of stone tool or weapon. Very heavy for the size would figure it is granet. Thanks |

Well, due to the blurriness of the picture, it looks like a plain old rock to me. Although I may be wrong, does the stone appear to be pecked and ground? Are there any dimples? Does it appear to be smoothened out? This may be evidence that it was indeed pecked and ground.

Thanks for the reply. I took another pict. but still does not look the best.
I am new to the things you are asking but the stone has dimples and is very smooth. the demples are very small. It is not quite egg shaped but very simular to one both ends are the same size. Thanks again for the reply. |

MEGABUCK26, Man I don't know where you found your stone! But I live'd above the Cols. Zoo when I was a boy on Seldom Seen Rd. At the end of that Rd. and the Scioto River there was a drought one year and the River went down. My brother and I found all kinds of arrow and spear points that had washed out of the river banks, we had pockets full! So if your into indian artifacts keep your eyes open. Also the fields in the area are wonderful places to walk with an eye to the ground. Lot of good finds. I have a rock like yours. very heavy. What's in it to make it so heavy=??? Looks like it would have made a great grinding stone and maybe it was? It sure is nice to have the time to tip toe around creeks and fields and watch the birdies, very peaceful. Later.

MEGABUCK26, It looks very similar to one I found that I had identified at the museum. He told me it was a "concretion". Some one else told me they were called "Shaman Stones" or "Moqui marbles" In the Hopi language, the word "moqui" means "dearly departed one." Legend says that the departed ancestors of the Hopi Indians of the Southwestern United States played games with these "marbles" in the evening when spirits are allowed to visit the earth. When the sun rises they must return to the heavens so they leave the marbles behind to let relatives know they are happy and well. So it could be an artifact if the native americans used it,but either way it still is a neat find. ---wymanwvp1

Would this stone have been a trade item or would have all natives used these for games. I am on the east coast. It does make sence what you said for the size of the stone. When I think of artifacts I think of tools or weapons not toys. I need to start thinking more of a life style.
Thanks for the info. |
