If you're going to be swinging on the beach then you're going to get wet sooner or later, strongly consider biting the bullet and getting a waterproof detector. Va Beach is full of highly experienced surf pirates, some near legendery ones (GravediggerMax, Va Mike, Va Ron, etc., etc.) so get a big gun to at least put you on a level playing field equipment wise. If you run into any of these pirates you'll be glad you did as they are extremely helpful and fun.
Excal is what I'm thinking of course but Beach Hunter ID, CZ-20 or a PI unit are other possibilities.
