Default Great story

Hi,
That's a great story. I work as a private investigator and have had to dig up info people wanted to forget. Pappy was right about going to the town hall to the tax assessor's office to find old tax info on owners. You can also find the bar in town the cops like to hang out at. Buy a few rounds, it goes a long way.
You can also try the unofficial town historian every town seems to have one. I hope these help and good luck with that hunt.

Tax assessor's office seems a great place to start. Will also go to the local library and see what back issues of newspapers they may have from that time period. Ummm...in this town girls, bars, and cops don't mix well but I'll definitely try to hunt down the town historian...gotta be one somewhere!

Thanks!

Wow what a story! i am with pappy, use the courthouse, check the deeds and if you can get it, check the trial records. Maybe something was mentioned about possible locations for the money! Could be worth a try. Good luck...please let us know what you find out!

Great idea. It would be neat to check in and see how the progress was going with this.

Lightbulb Research sources

When doing your research include neighbors. Who owned the property in the area around the location. If there is a 'Coles Directory' for your area, from the years around the time of the crime or soon after, it will list by zip code the names, addresses, occupations etc. of the residents in the area.

Check out the local historical society for the town or county, you may find your local historian there or through your local library, they tend to become known to the libriarians through their visits. While at the Library check to see if they have local and major city newspapers on microfiche that would have carried story lines on the crime and trials. Local TV and Radio may be able to help fill some information on the crimes/trials also.

Also Sanborn insurance maps might help in locating leads and identifying structure locations watch for outhouses, mine shafts and wells on these.

When checking the court transcripts, don't overlook the jurists, they had to sit and hear the story as near the source as you can expect to get.

You may even turn author and write an article for a Treasure Magazine, or maybe a book or booklet suitable for the history buffs out here.
