Very good find!
Looked in 2003 edition of R.S. Yeoman "Red Book" of United States coins. Lists the Massachusetts Cent as a 1787 - 1788 issue. The one at hand looks to be a 1788 with a period after "Massachusetts." Lists in the book at $80.00 in good condition. Greg may have more up to date information on this piece. A coin like that would probably only show up over here, in the New England region. Pappy.. you're right. It sure would be interesting to know how it got there. Most likely lost by a merchant or sailor upon returning home. But, we can imagine it was dropped by Ben Franklin himself, on a diplomatic visit.. Any way it got there, sure is a neat find. Ed |
