Hey Rob, I've been hearing of it on the news but not really paying attention to it. You brought it home....Thanks.

Dooby mentioned shots, would that be tetanus or is there something else that we could/should get?

Thanks for the info.
Have to say I never wear gloves. Maybe it's time to start.

And Dooby, Good idea about the hand sanitizer.

I was treated once for staph infection. My arm turned really red. I didn't have a cut.
The doctor told told me it was probably because my elbows were really dry and that is enough to get it. A cut wasn't always necessary to get the infection.

Default Nasty bugs

I keep telling an md friend to get his tetnus, but he won't. An uncle in his 60s or 70s got his finger hooked while fishing and thought nothing of it. When he finally went to the dr. to get it checked out it was too late and he died an extremely painful death.

I saw a 20 year old on the morning news last week that had MRSA and her left leg, although healed, is really hard to look at. The hospital photos were even more gruesome.

Thank you for the warning. I never would have thought about it being in untouched dirt. I guess I'll be more consistent in wearing my gloves.

Hi Rob:

Thanks for posting on this. I didn't realize it was so serious and certainly didn't think it would hit close to home. But it is...and it has. We just had a local high school closed for a day because of a boy with MRSA (still waiting to hear how he is doing) and my niece attends the University of Delaware where her room mates best friend died from it just last week. The best friend didn't attend the university, but my niece and her room mate were visiting with this girl just four weeks ago. Both girls are fine, though.

I homeschool my son but my daughter attends the local high school (not the one with the MRSA scare). I gave her a bottle of hand sanitizer to carry with her at all times (with strict instructions to use it).

Between MRSA and meningitis...it's a scary world out there right now.
