First time looking

for gold today. W'ere going to a place called Ash Canyon to check some dry stream beds. Can anyone clue me in as to how i should set my detector's settings for this? Gold is said to have been found up there and iv'e been catchin' the bug, reading up on finds in Arizona. The odds are astronomically small that we'll find some but who knows...can't win if you don't play! wish me luck!

So my father-in-law and i went up into ash canyon today. I was pumped up pretty good by the research i did and was super optomistic about maybe finding a nugget...but like they say, you cant just go out expect to find it. We searched a small dry creekbed and found mostly trash left behind from the illegals . with the detector i found a belt buckle,small folding set of beard trimming scissors, wire, and i thought maybe Buster was here because of the empty spam cans laying around! lol anyway, the rocks here are just amazing to look at, i couldn't tear my eyes away as we left. so many differant kinds all over the place. lots of quartz, a ton. one quartz i found must have weighed 50 pounds! and it had long quartz crystals on it. i almost brought it home but it was too heavy to lug up the creekbed to the truck. but i might go back for it, maybe at least to get a picture. one thing we discovered that was a little sobering was a huge paw track left by (we think) a mountain lion. they do reside in these mountains they say so it's a little tough to just go and look any ole place, you never know whats crouching just out of view! buddy system will be used in the future no matter what. we also found a fossil of a small clam just laying right on top of this rock outcropping..and i found what i think could be a fossilized flipper from a turtle of some kind. i will be posting pictures as soon as i find a good set of batteries. all in all it was fun and i think i might be swaying the old boy( i call him pops )to go ahead and buy a metal detector. i think he's starting to get the itch of relic/coin/gold hunting! he he he take care guys! (sorry no beautiful nuggets to share ...YET)
