Well it’s official, my vacation time off has been approved by work and more importantly by my wife, so next month I’m off to the Nevada high dessert with my pup (Kandi) to do a little rock hounding and ghost town hunting. I wish I could include treasure hunting with a new metal detector to the list, but after reading the do’s and don’ts of buying one I’ve decided not to rush into it and have regrets later. So I’ll just have to settle for researching future sites to hunt on this trip.
I picked up a book titled “Rockhounding Nevada” a couple of weeks ago and have been researching the net for the locations of the sites listed in it. The book is great; it lists over eighty sites to rock hound, gives detailed directions with road conditions, where to look, and what you should expect to find. I've been searching on the terraserver website and have been able to pin point about 4 sites so far, and have printed out aerial photographs of the roads leading to the sites. I’ve also printed out lots of information from the Ghost towns USA website (Great site), there must be at least ninety ghost towns listed in the three counties that I’ll be searching in. Some of course are nothing more than a hole in the ground, but there are quit a few that still have buildings left. So I’m hoping to scope out some future sites for metal detecting and treasure hunting. Even if I don’t find anything it’s going to be great to get out on a road trip and do some camping. No wife, no kids, just me and the wonder-pup. I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!! ![]() Mike |

Oh she’ll fen for herself. We don’t call her the wonder pup for nothing. One look at that pathetic little face of hers and you’ll give her anything, and besides she wouldn’t have a long wait. I can lose it pretty fast.
![]() Snakes are a concern of mine though, to my knowledge she’s never seen one before and I’m not sure how she’ll react. She’s usually cautious of new things, but she does love to chase them critters. So I’ll probable have her on a short leash until I’ve scoped out and the area. Now if I can just train her to sniff out the gold, we might have time to make it back to the casinos. ![]() |

This will be my third trip of this kind to the high desert. The first time was about fourteen years ago and I did it in my 1983 Toyota Cressida. I went to late in the fall and because of the weather I was pretty much limited to hwy50 as far as Austin. I did get off the hwy to see some sites, but as far as the ghost town hunting went it was a bust. That’s not to say that the trip was wasted, because the high desert in late fall can be rather beautiful.
The second time was couple years later, and I did it in my 89 Cressida. This time I went earlier in the fall and was able to get off the hwy, but was still quit limited. I managed to log a couple hundred miles of dirt roads and visited a few ghost towns. This trip we pull out all the stops. I’m pretty confident that my 92 full size 4x4 Blazer will get me where I want to go this time, and there are a lot of places that I want to see. Mike |
