Default Location Update

Just a quick update from my end - I am on the move again.

When I joined this great site I was living in Valdosta, GA, then came Albuquerque, NM, and now I am moving on to Tampa, Florida. Military life, need I say more?

So on to the good stuff, any TQ members out that way? Local groups I should join? Any scuba divers need a dive buddy? Everyone here is such a wealth of knowledge, a person would be silly not to ask.

The high desert is beautiful, but I am so looking forward to being back in my element... and using my MD for what it was intended... the OCEAN!!!

(Sorry Buster... I was hoping for Hurlburt and we got MacDill. Maybe next move?)

Hey Chick -

Well here's my thoughts from this end... I Love it!! I've been a scuba diver for many years so when I found out that I could afford an underwater detector I was psyched. The same friend that got me interested in MD brought me to KellyCo where, with their questions, my goals, & their advise, I bought my Excalibur 1000/10" coil. This is my first detector, so I honestly don't have anything to compare it to. I do know from watching others at the beach that our MD tends to be more accurate in salty sand/water conditions than others. Sorry I can't tell you what those other machines were, but I know they weren't rated for true water detecting.

Being new and having no one to learn from, I would say the learning curve is relatively low for this unit. But again I stress I have not used another machine. The one point I would make is, this unit can search deep - perhaps too deep at times. While in Maine I was digging a very clear signal, as it turned out, it was a run off pipe almost three feet down. As I found out, you have to use your best judgement...lol... or you could be digging your way to China if you're not careful. Minelabs writes a pretty good instruction manual, I highly recommend reading it. I'm not one for cracking the manual (ever) but since I had no one to learn from, I had no choice. It was beneficial to say the least. I also never go out without some type of metal on me - a gold ring, a quarter, etc. I don't get to go out as often as I like so when I do, I toss down those items, scan them to refresh my ears, make adjustments to my controls if needed and search with more confidence. I also leave my controls wide open for the most part on disimination & threshold. Others will probably disagree or have their own approach (take it all in and learn with every opportunity), but I don't mind digging every signal - even if it's trash. I consider myself in good standing with Mother Earth, I encourage you to do the same. Gather the worthless pop tops, gum wrappers and twist-off caps and dispose of them. There isn't anyone there to give you an "atta-boy" but it sure makes you feel good knowing you did the right thing. Oh and just one more - if you're digging with a metal scoop as I do, I hide it behind my back as I'm walking down the beach. My MD tends to throw signals at me as I scan because it's picking up the metal from the scoop in my hand. I'm petite so that might be just an individual problem, but I thought I'd at least mention it.

Hope this is helpful. Just get out there and have fun! If you're at all close to Tampa let me know.
