I had this idea....and wanted to see if anybody else thought it was feasible to do. me.....I think it would open some doors.
Bottom line....most of us are good hearted souls and could be talked into giving up our modern coin finds to charity if it meant being able to open more sites to hunt. My proposal would be to found an organization, tentatively to be called "Finding Hope ", and pick a charity (perhaps the American Red Cross) to which members would donate their modern coin finds while being able to keep the silver and interesting finds. Rules would state that any class rings with ID would have to be returned to their rightful owners (something most of us do anyway) and that property owners be asked prior to hunting if they'd lost any jewelry items, wedding bands etc.....ask for a description, and if found during the search....agreeing to return them to the property owner. Membership cards could be printed up and could be shown to property owners when asking permission to detect. Participation would be purely voluntary....meaning there could never be any "administrative costs" which eat up charity proceeds more times than not. Asking permission to detect for something other than blind greed....might make it easier for some of us to do. It would remove that perception of "panhandler" that some folks have of detectorists....and we could actually make a difference...if even a small difference. We could work with local clergy and gain access to a great many sites that would otherwise be off limits. I have found that elderly property owners are pretty easy going for the most part anyway...probably because they have already figured out that you can't take it with you. Any input?....Dumb idea? ...I was just thinking.....it might make more sense to work more closely with local clergy and donate the proceeds from specific time periods to the charity of "their" choosing....a local food bank perhaps. That might encourage them to aid us in our endeavor. We could, given participation by local churches , through announcements from the pulpit, ask permission of whole communities at the same time.

YOu must be feeling better....Glad of that. I think that a program like this could work very well in the right areas. I'd like to start in Waynesburg, with all of those Victorian homes over there. That has been a college town since 1850, and many, if not most of those yards are untouched.
I'm surprised there's been no more commentary. It would give hunters a personna of legitimacy that they otherwise would not have in the eyes of some folks. Wyatt |
