Default New Guy in Virginia

Names’ Mitch in Fredericksburg Virginia
I am new to the site and to MD. I just got a BH Sharp Shooter II for Christmas. My yard already looks like a battle zone (J/K…sort of). I am honing my detecting and digging skills before going anywhere else. I have already been caught sneaking out back at night with my head lamp after work. I am having problems with my detector and may have to send it in for repair. I hate to be dead in the water though. If anyone has the same unit I would like to bounce some of the issues off them.

I have read some great stuff so far, glad to be here.

Post Welcome Aboard .....

Hi Mitch,
We're all sorry your having problems with your Detector, that could be very discouraging for someone just starting out MDing but, we're also Glad that your Here Now....I wish there was something I could do to help you...but, unfounately I only use Whites Detectors..What kind of problems are you having with your Detector?? You didn't mention what sort of problems they were....Is it acting eratically ?? Are you using a preset program?? Was it purchased from a local dealer or mail order ?? If it was purchased form a Local Dealer, take it back and explain what it's doing/or not doing, maybe they'll be able to help you out. Again Welcome Aboard !!
Later John

Default Thanks for the welcomes! These are the issues:

Thanks for making me feel welcome!
Since xoxididntdoitxox asked, here are the issues:
*false signals, I dig and nothing is there. I turned the sensitivity down and it did not seem to help much.
*signal if the coil brushes grass lightly or if I barely touch it with my finger if it is wet (from dew)
*“Xing” a target is not always possible. I am unable to get a signal when moving the coil front to back as opposed to side to side.
*testing the unit with exposed metal conduit where we had removed some sidewalk. The unit only recognizes the pipe when swinging perpendicular to the pipe run, not when swinging in the same direction (due to ground signature not changing?). This was in discrimination mode with the DISC all the way counter clockwise (off) and the sensitivity all the way up. Had to swing real fast for a signal as well.
*went out and the speaker was not working. I would get a beep here and there, but not the initial startup beeps. I used some headphones and they worked. I checked the external speakers a few times while using. Eventually after 2 hours I started getting sound from the external speaker. Seems like a short?
*detector has only seen about 16 hours of use, and only in my back yard. I have been able to retrieve some targets (clad coins, old lead, large iron etc.), but these items did not always seem to be in the expected target area.
I got the detector online frome a large well know mass marketer of all kinds of products. BH will take it for warranty service, it will just take a bit.Should I post this in another area as well?
Thnx all

Post Mitch, I think it's a short too....

Hi Mitch,
I read your e mail and I believe you Hit The Nail on the head Bud, when you said that you thought it might be
" A SHORT ' in the circuitry in the Coil or Detector Box itself. The other indication was when you said " that you didn't get the initial startup beeps" either. That to me would be a sure sign of it not working properly in the first place. I would call the Company where you purchased the detector from and find out how to ship it back for Repair.Tell them its still under warranty. Print out a copy of this e mail (your part) where you mention what type of problems you were having with it, and I'll just bet a dollar to a doughnut that if they cant repair it they;ll send you back a New Detector. Mitch, I'm sorry I couldnt be of more help to you than this without having my hands on it and trying things out for myself. You understand this, Im sure. All the Best to you in getting this issue resolved quickly, hopefully, before nice weather returns to your area in Virgina. You also asked if you should Post this to another Fourm...I dont think so ....Why ?? ...I think you figured out your own problem, and with the detector still under warranty the Company who sold you the Detector in the first place is responsible for getting it back to good working condition.....makes perfect sense to me.
