Default ace 250 ground balance question...

Howdy,
What is your opinion on using the ace 250 where there is lots of red clay iron ore close to the top of the ground? In places it might be only a couple of inches of top soil, in others it might be 18 to 24 inches of top soil over several feet of iron ore.
My old fisher 551 has to be set up to 8-9 to balance out most places here.
I would like to know if the 250 would be squealing and cutting up all time or what to expect..
Thanks,

Using the Ace on red clay shouldn’t cause a problem but the iron ore will. You may need to notch out iron, far right. Although it’ll knock out most relics too.

Hi Tomcat, and welcome.

I have a 250 that I use most of the time in NE Tennessee (plenty of red clay) and I get good depth for coins and can run sense up to 6. Shouldn't be a problem.

Generally you should be OK but as with any condition , the Ace can only compensate to some degree since it has a pre-set GB.

i bought the ace 250 last week. i have no previous metal detector experience. i noticed my finds are under 3 inches. just for grins i buried a quarter at about 5 inches. i tried adjusting the sensitivity and changing modes and scanned from different angles and nothing i did produced a signal. i did some research before i bought the detector and several people reported finding targets at 8 inches. could i be doing something wrong? does anyone have experience with the larger coil? would the larger coil go deeper?

Hmmm, my "yellow fellow" can detect cents to about 7'' so I don't see why it won't detect a quarter you buried at just 5''. I not only have the 9 x 12 coil, but the stinger coil as well. I like using the 9 x 12 on areas I know there won't be much trash, or doing a last sweep of areas I have gone over with the stinger or stock coil. I usually only detect about 1 - 2 hours at a crack so sometimes the larger coil will help me cover a larger area more quickly. I didn't really see any difference (depth wise) between the stock and 9 x 12 coil.

You are sweeping at ground level and not holding your coil an inch or so above the surface, correct?

I'm new too and own an Ace250, but from reading posts from the wonderful people on this forum I have learned that if you just bury a quarter, it may not read well. A quarter that has been buried for a while reads better because the soil around it picks up on it's conductivity.

I'm not really explaining it well, but I know someone who knows the right verbiage will jump right in and explain it better.

i'm sweeping as close to the ground as the grass permits. most of the places i hunt haven't seen a lawn mower. ever. pris is right tho. everyone i've talked to says the coin creates some kind of reaction in the soil over time and most of what the md is seeing is the corosion which causes a coin to read as iron or foil. how do you like the 9/12 coil, is it harder to pinpoint?

I hope you are correct as I buried a few of the new dollar coins to see what they would ring up as with the Ace. The one buried flat rang up fine (varied half to a dollar) but the two I buried on weird angles I can't find LOL. I know the area I buried them, but not the exact spot
