Default DFX Std Program & Headphones

Hi guys, I was out on Sunday hunting an old seasonal cabin that used to be owned by a Somerset County judge. It was built in 1939. I sure thought I would find more than I did but who knows perhaps no one lost any change. Anyhow I found 4 pennies, the oldest being a 1916. Then I went to the oldest building in Somerset, which is owned by my dad. I found a few pennies, the oldest being 1917. Sure did expect to find some silver or there.

I have a few questions and I sure would appreciate it if anyone could help me. First, I have been using the stock Coin Program in my DFX. Is it capable of finding silver coins or are there some adjustments I should make to make the program better for finding older coins? I don't have headphones currently, what is the purpose of headphones other than to mask the noise from others? Would it be a good idea to purchase some and if so can anyone recommend a brand and type? I read on here someone commented they found a silver coin but it was on its edge. Did having headphones help you find it? I don't have a pinpointer yet. I was watching a video on you tube and a fellow was using one it sure seemed to cut his search time down. I keep digging empty holes would the pinpointer help with this? Can you recommend a pinpointer? My last question is regarding the holes you dig. I have been using the method they show in the manual. Cut the turf in a horseshoe and lift it back then scoop out the dirt onto a white towel recover your coin then dump the towel in the hole flip the turf back on and tramp on it. My question is the size of the turf that I usually cut initially is about 4 x 5, is that about how big you start your holes? I read about a story about a 50 coin day, I don't think that I doing things right because there is no way I could dig and search 50 holes per day.

I am brand new to this but I'm very eager to learn.

Boobie, if you happen to read this. Let me know when you are going to the park, I sure would like to watch the pros in action. You and Mr Silver sure do find the coins, you guys are the professionals of metal detecting.

Thanks in advance for you comments.

You shouldnt have any problem finding silver. If you can find a dime and a quarter you can find silver. How deep did you find the wheaties? You might take some time and look at "thebeepgoeson" dot com webpage he has a pretty good spread of target VDI's. Id suggest a pair of headphones cheap or otherwise. Your batteries last longer, you can hear the targets better, but you are connected to the detector. Finding coins on their side just tells you how good a detector the DFX is. They are difficult to hit, in fact when you dig a coin and it disappears in the hole, sometimes its just on its side. A pinpointer do you need it no, do they save you time yes. Just get a cheap one like the little wizzard II about $18... if you like using them then INVEST. Do you have Jeff Fosters book "digging deeper with the DFX"? If not its a good investment for anyone with a detector, tons of need to know information. All your questions about tweaking your DFX is in the book. HH

Go back there when you can, with the 1916 Wheatie there should be good stuff still hiding in the ground. Then I went to the oldest building in Somerset, which is owned by my dad. I found a few pennies, the oldest being 1917. Sure did expect to find some silver or there. the same thing at this site. You just didn't swing over it yet.

I have a few questions and I sure would appreciate it if anyone could help me. First, I have been using the stock Coin Program in my DFX. Is it capable of finding silver coins YES it is capable of finding silver coins and much more or are there some adjustments I should make to make the program better for finding older coins? You can for starters, turn up the ac & the dc sensitivity up to where it still stays stable. The other thing you can try is to use the coin and jewelery program, it has less discrimination and will certainly find more articles that the coins program masks out. I don't have headphones currently, what is the purpose of headphones other than to mask the noise from others? Would it be a good idea to purchase some and if so can anyone recommend a brand and type? Headphones are a valuable tool, they will let you turn down the threshold and help hear the deeper not so loud targets. Plus they batteries will last longer in my opinion. I read on here someone commented they found a silver coin but it was on its edge. Did having headphones help you find it? They have helped me immensely in finding coins on edge. I don't have a pinpointer yet. I was watching a video on you tube and a fellow was using one it sure seemed to cut his search time down. I keep digging empty holes would the pinpointer help with this? It sounds like you just need more practice pinpointing. The DFX is very good @ pinpointing targets. Even so a quality pinpointer is a very important tool in my opinion. The Vibraprobe is one of the very best. My 2nd choice is the Whites Bullseye. I have both of them and to me the Vibraprobe is the better of the two. Although I purchased the SunRay Probe which to me is the very top of the line. Chuck of Treasure Hut has the Vibraprobe & the SunRay. That is pretty much a good size to go with. As you get better with your pinpointing that should be just fine. I read about a story about a 50 coin day, I don't think that I doing things right because there is no way I could dig and search 50 holes per day.
When you start finding a bunch of coins either silver or clad 50 holes won't seem like very much.

I am brand new to this but I'm very eager to learn.

Mr. Silver and I surely aren't professionals, we just get lucky. This coming Sunday we and a couple others are going to Midland Park.
EVERYONE COME ON DOWN AND HAVE SOME FUN.

When we have warmer weather Mr. Silver , HarryPa and I would love to run down to Sumerset and have a fun hunt with you

Thanks in advance for you comments.

Dewcon and Boobie thanks for your replies. I'm going to get a set of headphones and a pinpointer. I had some credit coming to me from Whites, I ordered their pinpointer last Monday. I also ordered the book you both referred to.

I'm planning on being at your Park on Sunday unless its supposed to rain all day. If you are going to be in Midland its about 2 hours from my house in Somerset. I will contact you via PM to find out exactly where you are going and what time.

Thanks,
