Its always good to have a test garden. I often scan my small test garden before I go detecting because most metals will give mixed readings in different soil conditions..For example, I may get a very good solid tone with vdi being 79-82 on a Mercury dime at 10 inches in WET soil.
BUT: that very same dime at the same depth in bone dry soil will/might give me a chattery tone.
So try to always scan your test garden first , this way you'll know what to expect out in the field.
Plant coins at different depths and also place a few on edge. Also put a pulltab and or nail or both by a coin. this will help you out in the field
It's important to keep a record drawn down on paper to whats in your test garden and where.
I hope this helps you some
