Yes, I did run across a free trial program to record all of the information you were looking for. I down loaded it, and messed with it a little bit.
The thing with the free download is, is that not all the features are functional. If you search for free metal detecting downloads, I'm sure You will find it. I have since uninstalled it. But have run across it several times. It is always the same program. |

Let's see...
Detector................$200-1000+ Lesch digger...........$40 Great Headphones...$75-150 Gas for each hunt...$3-whatever per trip Extra coils.............$50-250 each Free software that someone put hundreds of hours of work into so you can keep track of all your finds, locations, detectors, etc. Priceless As a programmer who is working on my own program, for my own use, I don't understand why forking out a little more dough for another useful tool to make the hobby a little more well rounded is so tough for everyone. Everyone wants free software, but will spend a lot of money to pursue the hobby otherwise. By the time all is said and done (if it is ever really done), I will probably have 500+ hours into the project. I have no intention of trying to sell my software, so this is not what this is about. I would be happy to give it to you, but it would require a $120 purchase of a database program, and that would scare most people away, not to mention that it would be a support nightmare for myself in just trying to get it set up, as the database is not for the faint of heart. Good luck on your search! I didn't find much. iDetect is pretty cheap, but I didn't really care for it with the casual look I took at the 14 day trial. |

When you spend 500+ hours on a program pounding out code, it typically means you are either going to attemp to sell that product, or in other words you knew prior to starting the project that you were creating a commercial program or it was strictly for your use and you love to do programming. The intent here was not to have to pay for a commercial grade program just for the simple fact that, as you yourself stated, we have put so much into this hobby already. You yourself defined the very essence of my argument, "Free software that someone put hundreds of hours of work into so you can keep track of all your finds, locations, detectors, etc." This indicates the program was created for resell which is not the focus of this rebuttal. I myself have written many programs, well let me clarify, excel solutions, for may things. I have a softball teams stat program, a fantasy analysis program, a Baseball betting program, a forms vault solution, a 4 and 5 man bowling stat tracker program. Yes most are in the excel format but so what? The point here is I offer these up for anyone that would like them. I spent alot time researching and coding these with VBA to make them decent easy to use programs. I did it because these are things I like, things I wanted to make my life easier in these hobbies I have. The end result is that I get to share with anyone that shares in these hobbies these programs and the only payment is the fact I am proud when I get an email telling me that they love the program and it really helps them with their hobby or sport. If you want to keep your program to yourself, that is certainly your prerogative. These are yours, you worked very hard to make them. But please do not scold those of us that would gladly share these that we create to make our hobby better, more fun and less expensive than it already is. I certainly do not want to offend any programmer, for I know the length of time, the frustrating hours, in creating a fully functional, end-user friendly solution that is valuable enough to market. I also know that there are those of us that put together programs simply because we love to code, we love our hobbies and are willing to give it to fellow hobbyist. I truly hope your program works well for you. If you do decide to re-sell it I further hope it is a success. The above rantings are my opinions only and really have no bearing on anything. Just thought I should make my position clear. Zendog

I really wasn't directing my post to you either, just people in general. I see the same thing on other forums as well. But I shouldn't begrudge people for wanting something for free if it is made available. I also don't begrudge people for creating something and making it available for free. Thanks for the good wishes on my project. It is coming along well, but slowly. |
