Question New detector for beach AND land, up to $500 or so?

Hi everyone,

I've had a White's Classic SL for about 7 years now. I got it when I was 10. I searched mostly through the small strip of woods behind our house and a schoolyard in Michigan. I used it a lot the first few months, then only occasionally throughout the next couple of years.

Now my family just moved to Orange, CA and I'm interested in maybe getting a better detector. I'd like to get one that:

- works on the beach (& wet sand) AND on land
- has a computer-like screen that shows what kind of find it is. (Don't know what it's called)
- light weight
- easy to start using

I was looking at the White's XLT (that was my dream metal detector when I was 10), but I read in several reviews it doesn't work well at all on the beach. I know my Classic SL might not have - I used it on the beach on vacation once and didn't find a thing.

So does anybody have any suggestions of a metal detector for me? (What about White's M6 model?) I'm willing to spend up to $500 or so. I may end up selling it again before I go to college.

NOTE: I'm talking in eBay/used prices here, not retail.

Maybe a MINELAB Xterra x50. Anne has one and I have an x70 and we both love them.

What's the "ebay mistake"? I've been buying and selling on eBay for almost 6 years now and have never been scammed. (Biggest problem I've had was someone sent me a book to the wrong address, but I got my money back through Paypal)

If you mean there are special things I should look for when I'm examining metal detectors on eBay, please... do tell!

A few things i consider the ebay mistake is mainly due to inexperienced buyers paying way too much for older detectors, lot's of older whites coils out there are bad (i got 2 of them)

Many of the sellers on ebay have No Clue as to the condition and over hype the metal detector they post and is obvious when reading the item description. Estate sellers and pawn shops and others come to mind.

I bought a number of good detecting items off ebay from well informed folks and respected sellers but there are scammers and ill formed sellers on ebay more rampant than found on the various forum classifieds and what respected dealers have posted for sale. I read most of the forums and ebay is often noted as a buyer beware place to purchase (used) equipment and many get caught up in the Bid Hype and way overpay. I still buy off ebay but watch bid limits and carefully read the description and watch shipping charges which are way overpriced by some sellers. Just a few thoughts and have more but enough for now. Thanks for the advice everybody! I went with the Fisher CZ-7A Pro based on the recommendation of someone on another forum. I'll see how it works here in CA.
