Default Unstable Detector

Hi everyone, I need a little help with a problem I'm having with stability of my DFX. I have two sites to hunt and they are both giving me problems with stability. The first is a property that the home was built in the 1780's and the other is our farm where the farmhouse was built in the early 1800's. On both properties my DFX goes crazy. I want to hunt in the stock Coin & Jewelry mode, and I always do a little fine tuning with the target volume and I always like to hunt with tone ID on. I know and have tried both reducing the sensitivity and also the pre-amp gain. When I have reduce either the machine settles down but I loose a significant amount of depth. The difference between digging on average around 5 to 7 inches vs 1 to 3 inches. I need to get the maximum depth because I just believe the good stuff is just below what I can detect. I really need help in getting the maximum depth with stability. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Take Care,

Could you get or borrow another DFX and try it on that site?

If you have another coil give it a try.

What exactly is it doing, do the numbers or the icons bounce around?

Boobie, I don't have access to another DFX and I currently don't have another coil. When I try to detect these sites my machine sounds like a music box. The numbers and icons bounce all around. I always ground balance and it does balance but when I start detecting it goes crazy. I have tried reducing the sensitivity and pre amp gain and this definitly helps but I loose so much depth when I do either of those. I was out Sunday and I did find some newer clad but after I changed the sensitivity and pre amp gain my finds were mostly around 1 to 3 inches in depth. I got disgusted with the depth and changed it back then I couldn't stand the noise so I left. Any ideas cause most of the other places that I have detected I've had no problem with stability. Could it be because the ground is so old or is there a buried dump under both properties?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

I doubt that would be the problem @ both sites.
My only other thoughts would be to have someone use a different detector on the sites and see what happens. Other than that I would call or email Whites at the factory.

Perhaps someone else may have some suggestions for you.

Now this is just a Thought....

Did you happen to remove the Coil Cover. and see if there was dirt inside?

mtpockets, Thanks for your reply but I don't have a coil cover. I think it must have something to do with the soil buy what gets me is that my machine ground balances. I'm within 500 yards of an Electric Substation at the one property maybe that is the problem?

I have the same problem on the property behind my house. There are several overhead electrical wires that I am pretty sure is causing the problem. It is VERY annoying and makes it impossible for me to search there.
