Question Trash and Smaller Coils

Okay, they say there are no stupid questions so I'll just go out on a limb here and hope I'm not proof of the opposite. Anyway, when people talk about detecting in a high trash area and it just being horrible with non-stop sounds coming through the headphones, why is the advice usually to use a smaller coil? You're still swinging the smaller coil over the same junk - wouldn't it continue to produce the same sounds? Is it the fact that with a large coil, you have more of a tendency to have a coin and some junk under the same 10" (or however big coils are) area? Just wondering!
Thanks!
Paul

The benefits are as follows: The smaller coil can go in between pieces of aluminum and iron where a larger coil will always have the offending metal bits under it. Additional benefits are an increased sensitivity to small pieces of metal, easier pinpointing, and being able to get closer to walls, trees roots, and equipment. But in essence you are right. I love mine for public parks, wouldn't even try them without the small coil.

I have found that with my sniper coil I am able to single out the targets way better. If I have two targets really close together, all I have to do now is turn at an angle and swing so the other target isn't under the small coil.

Here's an example: I was swinging and two really close signals showed up as pull-tab and quarter really fast. I turned at a 90 degree angle and swung from this direction and was able to single out the quarter, then the pull tab.
