Default Ace 250 pinpointing & depth ?

I have read a lot of posts on the pinpointing of the Ace 250, and I'm sure the answer to my question must be here somewhere but I'm unable to find it.
How much does the depth of an object affect the pinpointing of the Ace?
Burying coins at an inch or two, my machine finds them at the outer front edge of the inner coil.
At anything over 5 inches this doesn't hold true, I'm lost and can dig all day with no results. I know I can't rely on the depth gauge on the Ace to be completely accurate but I do get good repeatable tones and believe they are deeper than 5 inches or so.
Does the signal from the coil travel straight down or is it conical which would affect the technique used for shallow finds?
ANY help from some of you veteran diggers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I was actually testing mine out today as well.

While pinpointing it gets really loud and the bars on the display are full. I have found that the target is exactly beneath the little notch in the coil.

I did get a faint reading and pinpointed and dug 6-8 inches to find a pipe.
I think it goes straight down.

2-4 Inch targets I can snatch up pretty quick

Just my experience in the few days with my new Ace 250

Also, I highly recommend getting a vibra probe!

I wouldn't hunt without it. Makes finding targets a snap

Default This is how I pinpoint

The first thing you need to know about the Ace250 is that the SWEET SPOT on the stock coil for the Ace250 is probably NOT in the center of your coil.

This is how I pinpoint with the Ace250.

1. Look at your stock coil. It has what appears to be a larger coil around a smaller "inner" coil.

2. The sweet spot on my coil is at the TOP of the inner coil, not in the center of the coil as I had assumed when I purchased the detector.

3. To pinpoint a target, hold your pinpoint button down and make an "X" pattern over your target and attempt to find the center. A quick note here about pinpointing: move your coil off the target and inch or two before hitting the pinpoint button.

4. Now while still holding the pinpoint button down and centered over your target, slowly begin to pull the coil across the ground and back towards you.

5. When your signal begins to fade, STOP, your target should be right at the top of the "inner" coil.

Give this technique a try with a coin on top of the ground and practice pinpointing before your next hunt. This pinpointing technique works very well for me.

One other thing I have found is if your target is below a couple of inches of dirt, your target may be under or just behind the top of the coil. If I don't locate a target within a minute or so of probing, I re-pinpoint and usually find I am off a bit left or right.

Default I agree

My next purchase will be a VibraProbe!

You're right on with the top of the inner coil Dooby, however with mine, in surface tests, I'm not on top of the coin till the signal completely nulls out, then the coin is just under the front edge of the inner coil. Will just have to experiment some more.
Thanks guys.

I myself have a 250. My best two purchases for my machine was the sniper coil. Now this coil I will not remove from my machine.....ITs awsome ! Talk about pinpointing. What you want is right under your sniper. Now with that said, I also purchased the sunray invader probe. It attaches to your main shaft of your 250 and runs off your machine batteries. The vibra probe runs off regular batteries. With the invader attached its all one unit and no more to carry in your pouch.and man is it nice. SO LITTLE time spent digging and being fairly new to MD ing both these add ons made my machine sooooo much better. Our sponsors here have both(coil and probe)My buddy out did me one day having this set up and I had no probe no sniper just the stock unit and he found about .45$ to my .10$ within 20 minutes at a local park. I said no more of this and now I have the same.Went out for about 30-40 minutes today and found my first silver dime and .68$. Good Luck..PP

You know what? I just realized that is why I had problems recently with my pinpointing. When I started my plugs were huge 6-12 inches in diameter. Now I try to make them smaller and what happened? Have trouble finding things. If I recall where the finds were this morning your hint proves what is going wrong for me. I'll try this technique for sure.
