Default Question on a quarter

Five months ago I made a metal garden. I put junk and coins among each other but there is this sole quarter off to the side that I drilled a hole in and attached some dental floss to and at the other end a peice of plastic ring. I know I know I am defacing money but I found it and a lawnmower got to it before I did, anyway I buried it 9" in the ground and I check it often when it rains and on my ACE250 I get penny -iron penny-iron. I have found that most of the time the Ace dosen't lie when it's a coin it bong on both sides. So why dosen't the GTI say Quarter? If these machines are to pick up at 8-10" why dosen't mine? I have tried several different kinds of batteries and even the most powerful ones don't seem to change it's reading. Maybe I just need to get that 12x9 coil?
Any feedback would be great
P.S. Maybe I should have put this in the Garrett Forum.

Is it bent or on its side? That's the only thing I can think of, unless it's too deep??? I'm also interested to see what people say.

You might dig it up and make sure there's no other metal down that hole. Your detector might be getting fooled by something else that swamps out the response from the quarter. Also, a hole in a coin will generally increase the response (http://geotech.thunting.com/pages/me.../induction.pdf), which will make for a bit different response. If it's burried on edge, you'll also get some variation...

Just some ideas that come to mind....

Fifty2,
I would not trust the ID meter on anything passed 6 to 7 inches. They are great on shallow targets but get fooled by ground minerals and small bits of iron close to a good target. Trust the sound more and if I hit a target at 9 inches I'm going to dig it no matter what the ID meter says. I have found some really nice stuff this why. I had a half dollar showing it was a pull tab at 8 inches. I knew that there were no pull tabs at this depth so I dug, and was rewarded with a nice Walking Liberty half.
Also don't for get about the halo, it takes years to build a good halo around a coin.
Hope this help some.

VERY VERY
good advice. That is what I always do and it usually is worth digging.

Thanks for the tips guys and girls I think I will dig it up to see if there is any other metal in the the hole as the coin. I thought I checked the area before I dug but I might have been in coin mode. The hole is smaller then an 1/8 in" in the coin. The coin is perfectly flat in the ground and I lied on the ground with a yard stick to make sure it was exactly 9" this doesn't include the grass.
