Question Where to get Old Topo maps

I just got a used White’s DFX from a local pawn shop for what I can tell it works fine, I went to the local beach to test it and found a few clad coins (3 quarter, 1 dime, 1 nickel, and 8 pennies) I’m completely hooked, I have done some research and found out that my town was first establish in 1913 it had a one room school a church and a woman’s club. I want to get a old and new topo map so I can compared the and see if I can find some sites that might be good for MDing as suggested on Dick Stouts book “Where to find treasure”.

Do you guys think this is a good method or what do you guys suggest?

Any help will be appreciated.

I think it's a great way to start!
If your town has a historical society, you may also want to check for old photos of these sites. Once you have located them with the aid of your map, you will know how big they were and possibly even get a sense for where they sat on the lot.
If you can't find maps online, try stopping at your county courthouse. They may be able to point you in the right direction.
Good luck and have fun!
Ed

Keep a eye on ebay there are some posted at all times. There are map dealers selling there. Email them and ask for the one you need, they have them. I should know I've done it and used them on sites. They can play a major role in a search. Search the web for historical topographic maps some will be listed and you can download and print them.

Hi Ruzty,

Also do a search on ebay for old post cards of your town, this is a good way to see what things looked like in the early days

That billfriedrich site is awesome if you don't have it download it it only takes a minute. Its unbelieveable, you can measure distances, type in coordinate on unique fetures on your gps. I've seen what looks like a stone wall on terraserver before but I know I'd get lost trying to find it but with the map overlay its just an awesome tool. Thanx boobieinpa this is a great thing. Jason

Now if you could just overlap old topo's of different years and treasure maps with those cute oversized "X" s on them at the end of a twisting, turning dotted line through the forest that'd be great. Jason lol
