Hi Cory, I Need More Information To Try And Answer Your Question Fully! Did You Want A Comparison Of A VLF Type To A Pulse,TR Or BFO Detector? Here's A Brief Answer But Not Maybe The Right Answer You Want. When Metal Detectors First Came Out They Were Of The BFO Type (beat frequency oscillator) These Were Unstable And Lacked Depth Then Came The TR Type (transmit receive) These Were Better Machines Because Of The Introduction Of Discrimination. But You Had To Keep The Search Coil At Ground Level So You Did Not Get An Audio Change. Then Came The VLF Type (very low frequency) These Had Discrimination Plus You Could Hold The Search Coil At Any Height With No Audio Change..These Are Type That The Majority Of Metal Detectors In Use Today Are. Then There Is The Pulse Type Now These Will Go Deeper Than Any Of The Other Ones But They Just Don't Have Discrimination...If You Need One With Discrimination Then You Can't Go Wrong With A VLF Machine. It's The Best Choice And Will In Most Cases Always Go Deeper Than The TR Or BFO Type. I Will Caution You That This Information Has Come Out Of My Head And As With Anything Get A Second Opinion... I Know You Did Not Want A History Lesson In Metal Detectors But I Hope This Helps...Thanks

hi thanks for responding....
. So what i gather from what you've said, is that i have a decent machine. Can you describe to me what discrimination actually means ? thanks !

Hi Cory You Never Stated What Brand You Have.. But If Your Finding Stuff And Having Fun Then The Brand Is Not Important....Discrimination In A Nutshell Is Basically A Control That A User Has To Control The Amount Of Desired And Undesired Items That He Or She May Or May Not Want To Dig....Thanks

Basically a VLF is a TR (transmit/receive) detector that runs at lower than 100 Khz in frequency. They are better in mineralized ground than those at higher frequencies and can be ground balanced to eliminate minerals. Not all VLF 's are good however and there are a lot on the market today that are junk. Just because its a VLFdose not make a great detector. That is not to say you will not find targets with any VLF because you will. It;s just that the better ones perform better .

responding guys...much appreciated. Does my famous trails fit into a good, or bad category? I've figured out how to tune the mineralization out pretty well , i was having some probs with that due to my location . The thing i'm working on now is acheiving the max depth, which the rep told me is up to 10 or 12 inches. Seems to be working ok so far though, iv'e found lots of debris and a small handfull of pennys.
