Default 5? 6? 8? inch coil???????????????

I am new to the sport , have been out maybe 10 times in last 3 months...I have a Minelab Quattro, which finds targets very well, BUT the pin pointing [or me] sucks....I am tired of digging grand canyons and thought a smaller coil , might be a better idea...What do you pros think?

By all means im not a pro and not at all familiar with your MD. I would suggest something I do all the time and thats practice in a test bed and work on my pinpointing. Ive noticed with my garrett ace250 factory coil 6.5 x 9" the pinpointer was a bit more accurrate an inch from center. But I havent hunted with it yet. Just my observations. I just recieved my sniper coil 4.5" and I havent tested it yet but from what Ive read, dead on when your pinpointing!

I would say practice also. I would say tape some coins to a large piece of cardboard and turn it over so you can't see them. Then scan over top and get used to the sounds that they make. As for digging stuff up after pinpointing...Just make a cross and listen well. Come back from a different direction and you should be dead center. What i do is dig down and grab the dirt in my hand and wave it in front of the coil. If the coin is in the dirt it will sound off. If not check the hole again. It's best to have all watches and rings off when you try this or you will sound a signal to yourself...This works good for me.I would also try hunting at the local school yards and parks where coins are in plenty just for practice.I hope this helps some......Happy Hunting...Buster...

If hunting beaches and large open areas or places where targets are spaced relatively far apart the 10" coil is a good choice. In areas where targets are plentiful the 8" or 5" coils may prove more practical and not only make for easier target location but more productive to boot.

Never used a Quattro but have a Sov GT and with a smaller coil the Pinpoint mode is rarely needed once you learn how to use the tip of the coil to initially locate a target and slide coil forward till signal is lost on the backside of the coil and drag the coil back maintaining the signal the length of the coil until it drops again ,try again at 90% and will help verify .The target is usually about 3/4 to 1 " inside the leading edge of the tip, of course depth can make location more difficult. Rather than digging a large surface hole try to dig an appropriate initial plug and eggout the hole if possible and use a pinpointer on turf sites.Just a few thoughts. HH Bill

I'm "not bad" on pinpointing with my 250, but on occassion I miss the spot. My main recovery tool is a flatblade screwdriver which I notched & welded an 1.25" flatwasher onto the tip.

By using a smaller tool like this it's easy to work it in under the sod level, and remove the side of the hole without increasing the actual opening. Because the washer is round, I decrease the odds of damaging the find.

Also, you might consider purchasing a seperate handheld pinpointer if you don't already have one, this will help locate what's in the hole, especially if it's off to one side. I use mine next to playground equipment, and to locate coins just under the grass when I find a clad-loaded spot. I've sat on the ground & picked-up a couple dozen coins more than once this way....lol, beats getting up & down all the time.

Don't know the Minelabs but pretty much what everyone else says. Practice, Practice and Practice some more. The smaller coils will help in trashy areas and may pinpoint better for Ya and I, as Others have Suggest get a hand held pinpointer. They are invaluable. JMHO.
Good Luck & HH

Smaller coil for trashy places, larger for clean places.
