Default Choosing 2nd or Backup Detector

I own a Minelab SE and very happy with it and still learning. I do want a second detector as a backup or something to aways have with me in the car in case I find a site when not really out on a hunt. I dont know if I want to always have the SE with me.

I dont need another top of the line detector but I do want something midrange with good features. I dont know if I want to stick with Minelab and get the X-Terra 50 or 70, Or maybe go with Whites or other brand and get the benefit of using different technologies.

Any suggestions?

I run the X-Terra 70. Very easy to use and operate. Nice features and the ablity to go deep. It also has some room to grow for a newb like me. Good luck with your choice, Beale.

ACE 250 Garrett is small, light weight, easy to cary in your vehicle, and is a great machine. Also the Whites Prizm series are good machines.

The Ace 250 if you want to buy new and whatever you can get a good deal on if you'll buy used. If it's going to be bouncing around in the trunk all the time and subjected to high temperatures in the oven your trunk becomes in summer, it won't last long.

Cheers,

BDA

That's exactly what I was thinking. The ACE is a good machine for the money... but the F2 is making waves everywhere too.

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

Hi osros,

Never used an Explorer but have a Sov Gt. and sweep speed is rather slow on the Sovereign and read it's fairly slow on the Explorer. Was thinking of two possible scenarios. A good used XLT would be a nice complimentary detector for the Explorer as it requires a moderate to quick sweep speed to achieve best performance but can cover a lot of ground quickly with great results. With a little experience it can achieve very good depth but the Explorer has that covered anyway

Second option would be a quick recovery reset speed 2 filter type detector and my favorite so far is the Whites M6 and with all the coil options can be very versatile as well. The Fisher F2 is also becoming a favorite of mine in very trashy areas especially with the 4" coil option and only costs $199 shipped. The Tesoro Golden uMax is a very good detector also. These 3 detectors have Tone ID and the M6 -F2 have meters.

Three single tone, quick response detectors i would recommend are the discontinued but outstanding Classic IDX Pro sold regularly on classifieds at reasonable prices, Fisher's 1236x2 is solid as can be and an excellent choice, and for some reason i really love the Minelab Advantage as it goes very deep and really hits hard on deeper copper, brass and silver but a new one is rather pricey and would buy preowned if not opposed to buying used.

Never used an Ace 250 or Tesoro other than the Golden uMax so can't comment on them. Good Luck. HH Bill
