Good questions and I think I can take a stab at the second one and only theorize on the first.
For the 2nd question, when I get a signal like that it ususaly involves the position of the target. I think it is a coin that is only slightly off vertical. If I dig and miss it, the signal will be strong when return the coil to the hole and I turn the coil to its side. For the first, it is hard for me to say. Some detectors discriminate targets better than others. I have had instances where I get 2 distinct signals within a small movement of the coil and the machine is always correct and a good target emerges with a 2nd target. I suppose it is possible to get a blended signal but that's where I just don't know. My golden rule is: when in doubt, dig it out. Leave no doubt (or target) behind.

For question #1 i would say that's big reason for using a tone id machine and as little discrimination as possible at Trashy sites then listen for a tone variance or mixed tone rather than always listening for individual targets. Much harder to decipher with a single tone machine metered or not.Just my preference for using Tone ID, others may differ.
For question #2, what Steve mentioned and you could also have a discriminated object,(decomposing iron and rusty nails are big culprits) on 1 side of the target and a clear shot at the target from the other sweep direction and there's also matter of reset recovery speed, coil size, discrimination settings etc. Just too many variables to name every possible reason. Just some added thoughts. HH Bill |

Sweeping from diff directions usually clears up what it is. On double targets you will sometimes hear chirps and a solid sound especially on nails close to a good target. I use a tone id machine also. |

I also agree with the tone ID detector. But what and how it's reported will depend on allot of things, like your question #2..what angle combined with question #1 what's around or by it. Keep in mind hot rocks, mineralized soil, high power lines, soil moisture etc will play a roll in how or if a detector will report. Just as important is distance the antenna (coil) is from the ground, how level it is and how fast it's moving combined with how fast the processor can determine if and what to tell ya.
All that said my Ace 250 has reported two distinct targets on a salt beach where my Sov. Just says it's one big one?....so much for the science. ![]()
